Default LS2 stroker (408 ci), anyone else pondering?

I'm still getting my car ready for 10's NA SI... however as soon as I do that I will want to do something big.

I'm debating doing an LS2 motor with a lunati stroker kit. Either the 4" stroke or the 4.125" stroke, not sure at the moment. I know you can get a very similar combo using the GM 6.0L Iron block however I did not do all the weight reduction just so I could drop an iron heap between my front skinnies.

I would buy a complete motor from GM (W/LS2 Heads) but my questions are regarding the cam and crank pos. sensors.

Are they located in the same place on the LS2 as they are on the LS1?

Can we get some verification in this thread on what parts are swappable between the LS1 and LS2?

Thanks.

I too am waiting to see if the LS2 block is workable in an LS1 application. In fact it is the only reason that I don't have a Darton MID shortblock already on order with one of the supporting vendors. Like you I don't want to do an iron block.

Another difference with the LS2 is that the knock sensors are relocated to the sides of the block.

Makes you wonder though if you could just put the LS6 valley cover on and put them back in the current location!

Might need to change a few things...

-knock sensors are supposedly in a different spot
-cam sensor might be in a different spot, hence cams will not interchange

Not sure on the second issue.

I've been thinking the same thing. If sensors are the biggest problem I'm sure someone will figure out how to make the swap work.

Also, it may take a while but LS2 blocks will get to an affordable range especially if the SSR, GTO, and maybe even CTS-V get a LS2.

Guys there are no LS2 Heads, they're 243 LS6 "Revised" Castings.

If anyone has pics of LS2 blocks we could check to see if the cam sensor is mounted in front like I was told.

Either way, if it's just the knock sensors and the cam sensor, then it's an interesting swap for sure.

I think a lot of people are eagerly waiting for the LS2 blocks to hit the streets, I know I am. The extra CI of the iron blocks, without the weight penalty. Can't beat that.

I was thinking of an LS2 project too; going with a stock stroke for a 364 or 365 c.i., a nice set of heads (either LS6 or AFR 225's), a good size but streetable nitrous cam, and a 175 shot. Although I'm going to do it in a 1969 Camaro, so I don't know if I'd have the same or different issues than fitting it into a 4th gen. Should be a pretty driveable setup and make some good power after all is said and done. Anyone know for sure is AFR's will be compatible with the LS2 block?

Knock sensors are on the side of the block probably requiring one to do a nice splice on their current wire harness to get the additional length most likely needed for one side.

The cam sensor is in the front, according to GM literature. This is a very simple issue, but may take a while for cam blanks to be available or made. Current cam specs should work nice, though.

So it looks like a lot of us our waiting. Seems that information isn't very abundant right now and how long we have to wait is unknown.

I certaintly wouldn't look at a resleeve right now unless you need bigger, hopefully they will price in line with LS1/LS6 replacement blocks when they become available.

Most of the changes made to the LS2 block are due to the revised oiling for displacement on demand. DOD will have the ability to "turn off" select valves by use of a special lifter. This required the block to be revised and the knock sensors moved to the outside of the block. Heads, intake, ect. will all bolt up.

It may be too early to ask this question because the LS2 block hasn't been released yet, but will it be capable of being bored over .030? If it is capable, why would you bore a brand new LS2 block for an extra 6 cubic inches? I would save any boring/honing to be done for a future clean up/rebuild.

We are working on a LS2 block "package", complete with bare block, timing cover, adaptor wiring harness, etc, everything to make it work for a LS1/LS6/4.8/5.3/6.0 customer. The price will hopefully be in the $1300 range for everything. It looks to be a good piece, we might have had a LS2 on the dyno last week As soon as I have all info I will post to let everyone know.
