Default What helicoil to use ?

Putting back together an LS2 and one of the bolts that mounts the oil pump to the block has stripped . Do I drill and tap for next size up or do I stick a helicoil in there and if so , what size ??

I think I would do the heli-coil. Keeps all the bolts the correct size. Be careful you don't drill to far into the block.

Try using the same size first. Helicoils are awesome.

Definitely the Heli-Coil. I doubt you could get a larger bolt through the OP anyway without causing even more problems.

Prob 10mm std thread (1.5mm I think). No problem though, just take one of those bolts with you when you go the store to pick up the kit, to make sure.

The fasteners for the oil pump are m8 1.25…which is the same fastener sizing as the front/rear covers, valley cover, oil pan, etc.
You need a Helicoil that will work with that fastener.

Beat me to it, Scott! SO MANY PEOPLE identify bolt sizes by the hex size, i.e. the size socket it takes. That is flat WRONG. I will also add that in my many years of installing these things, the best and hardest to screw up are the genuine Heli-Coil brand kits. There are many slightly cheaper brands, and they work pretty good. But I've had the best luck with the real Heli-Coil....

And Scott for the WIN. I was hoping Scott would chime in when I was reading the OP.

Appreciate it. Helicoils work well on fasteners that don’t require a lot of torque, and it’s SUPER easy to open up the hole to the correct size for the insert on aluminum pieces (block in this case) with the included tap.
