2006 GTO Engine builds
Hey Guys,
I purchased my brothers 2006 6.0L M6 GTO. I plan on adding a cam to wake it up a bit, any good builds I can follow and learn about cams? I plan on using this car mostly as a fun cruiser.

Here are my two builds. The 04 got heads and a cam, the 06 got a blower.

Make sure you have a tuning solution in place before you open up the engine. The forums are full of people asking why they put a cam in and now dies at idle, surges, bucks at low rpm, etc. The HPT forums as well as this one are also full of people who got a "reputable" tuner to work on their ecm, and still have all of those same problems. Also, most any aftermarket cam is actually going to give you LESS off idle power, so without a change in rear gearing your car may actually feel slower in the rpm ranges you spend most of your time in. Looking at dyno sheets pretty much never tells you what a cam will drive like in an m6 car, because the pulls don't start until 3000rpm or higher in most cases. A cam that is perfectly acceptable in an auto with a 3600rpm stall converter may be terrible to drive in an m6 with stock gearing. You need to do tons of research in order to avoid the almost inevitability of buyer's regret from getting too much cam for a fun drive or too little cam to be worth the effort and cost of swapping it.

On my 04 I put in a modest cam (218/226) and gained power throughout the entire RPM range over the OEM LS1 cam. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't lose power in the lower RPMs. Chosing the proper combination of durations, lift, and especially LSAs can result in a cam choice that doesn't destroy the bottom end.
I added the cam and better heads at the same time and gained 48hp. The heads probably contributed to the low RPM power boost. We started our pulls at just over 2000. The heads are AFR Enforcers and a nice improvement over the OEM 241 heads.

The streetsweeper HT has always been an awesome cam. It has pretty aggressive lobes though, which explains the power.
The 8707 summit cam is also great. Summit acknowledges that they trade a little power down low for more up top.
Personally I am leaning towards a rick crawford racing cam. He's big in the G8 world. Because his cams are geared towards ls3 heads, the splits are big. Either 221/233 or 225/239. I will probably combine the two and go with a 225/233, .612, 612, 111+3. This is for my 04 gto.
