My vote goes for tie-bar lifters instead of using the trays.

There are millions of lifters without tie bars that have worked fine for thousands of miles. Not that they are better than tie bars but failures are overstated. Some of the top LS performance shops put ls7 lifters in almost all of their builds without failures making lots of power.

The absolute key here is to use genuine factory GM trays, and to inspect old ones upon any teardown for defects and wear.

GM trays are not ideal for the most demanding applications.

Nothing is infallible and there are better parts for sure. I agree with the last couple posters. For the avg. member doing heads/cam and not spinning over 7000 rpm ls7 lifters are fine.

I'd be lying if I wasn't nervous about several parts in my current build at the power levels I'm currently making. It's a 5+ year old long block now so while I don't want it to break, I feel like I've at least got my money's worth out of it.

A cam that has 50% more lobe lift than a stock cam means a lot more "mileage" and potential for wear between the lifter and a tray. Stock cam and genuine GM trays do work well. I just wasn't going to trust them with my build. The lifter trays may also impede some oil drain back from the heads. Just my opinion.
