Default Pushrod Length with Johnson 2116LSR’s

Question for yall, measuring my pushrod length on an LS turbo build. Purchased johnson 2116 LSR lifters. Friend of mine told me to pump up the lifters through the side hole of the lifters with a handheld oil can and use 10w30 until I see oil coming out of the top of the lifters. This is to fully pump them up for accurate pushrod length. Then send the measurements to Manton. Johnson recommends + or - .045” for preload on top of measurement.

Just read online you should never pump up your Johnson lifters….

So before I order my Manton pushrods should I not add in any pre load since they were pumped up?

or should I take everything apart, squeeze oil out of lifters and start again

Well first off I think you should have installed them right from the box and measired pushrod length @ 0 lash then added desired preload and I would've shot fot .035. The fact that you oiled them probably isn't that big of a deal.

My .02 take it for what it is

yeah I should of but my buddy said to oil them to pump them up first because I guess in his mind the lifters will be pumped during operation so you factor this in? But that’s when you add the pre load in lol

Are you trying to measure by counting turns on the rocker arm bolt? Or by an adjustable checker and micrometer?

You don’t absolutely have to use a pushrod checker on johnson lifters, but I dont know why anyone would not. Its 100% easier and more accurate… as in the accuracy needed to know .035-.045”.

typically, pumping up the lifters is done with the count-turns-bolt-method.

good news is, you can easily drain the lifters by removing the snap ring and emptying the oil under the cup. Obviously pay attention to the disk under the cup and put it back together the way it came out. Pumping the piston underneath will pump out any minor remaining oil.

The risk you run pumping up johnson lifters, is due to the slow leakdown. If you start up with a lifter that wont leakdown (or extremely slowly) the preload you added ends up holding the valve open that amount as the lifter guts dont compress any.

Manton only takes measurements via overall length with micrometer. I will probably just try to stick a 7.4”pushrod in and try to push the lifter to press out all the oil no? When I measured all lifters they all measured a little over 7.5”
