Default 1X vs 4X Cam Gear

I'm deleting the VVT on my L92 and swapping to a 3 bolt cam. I'm using an aftermarket ECU. A friend has an old 1X cam gear from an LS2 left over after they upgraded to a double chain kit. Is there any advantage to getting a 3 bolt LS3 4X cam gear, or should I just run the 1X LS2 gear?

If it will make a difference, I'm happy to spend the $40 now on a new 4X gear rather than hamstringing myself later on when getting it tuned.

All Gen4 LS engines use a 4x cam sprocket. The question I have is what aftermarket ECM are you gonna run? You need to see what it wants to be sure here, but I bet $10 it wants a 4x.

Probably the ME442 from Motorsport Electronics.

There are only a handful of ECU’s that will interface with the CAN on my Miata NC, and even fewer that retain functionality of the power roof (it requires specific CAN signals from the ECU).

Okay, I've purchased a 4X cam gear just to be on the safe side 😅

I dont think there is a major difference performance wise. The 4x has more resolution which theoretically helps at higher RPM. In my LS6 in my C5 I ran a LS9 cam and 1x gear for 2 years without issue, seeing as much as 7400rpm. The main thing, already mentioned, is get what the PCM is looking for. I had to stay 1x to use the factory C5 PCM.

In my own opinion, When deleting VVT on an L92 and swapping to a 3-bolt camshaft, it is highly recommended to spend the $40 on a new 3-bolt 4X LS3 cam gear.
