Default New heads and intake on LS7

The specs for the LS7 are pretty impressive, but the heads look like they'll be a big improvement over the current offerings.

"CNC machining is also utilized on the new aluminum heads, which boast an 18% improvement in airflow over LS2 units. Nearly straight tunnel-like intake runners feed the air/fuel charge through huge 2.2-inch titanium intake valves while 1.62-inch, sodium-filled hollow exhaust valves let spent gasses back out. A hydraulic-roller cam provides a significant .591-inch lift,"

"Despite the massive displacement, lightweight internals give the LS7 a 7000-rpm redline in roadgoing trim"

Seems like the intake will have to be bigger/flow better than the LS6 or LS2.
The heads have massive valves and some stout springs to support 7000rpm reliably. The question then becomes how expensive will these parts be for everyone else that has an LS based engine. Also what will it take to retrofit them on existing LS based engines.

56 mm works out to a bit over 2.20" intake valves. They should breathe nicely !

.591 is correct, but I bet the duration is emissions friendly.
I guess you'd have to have a maximum bore engine just to consider
these heads, but I'm sure that won't be a problem for many of the
hardcore people on ls1tech

If it would fit, I'd bet the LS7 cam would be kickass in a mild LS1 346 set-up. I bet it's something like 218/230 .591/.591 118LSA (but I'm hoping the LSA is tighter). Anyone else want to guess?

I bet it is very close to the specs you listed, that would be mild on a 427. I have pretty much the same cam in my 346 218/229 .590/.590(lift with 1.8 cranes) on a 113 LSA. It runs pretty strong.

I woud thinkg the ls7 cam is going to be something like 218/220. It has to beable to pass CA emissions so a 218/230 cam i would asome would not make the cut.

As for the heads. That is a tuff call. I would have to see the heads to tell you. It is an LS series motor though so they might fit. For the FI world that would be bad ***. In the N/A world who know. They will be build for a 4.5+ pistons so on a stock 346 they would not work to well.

If the 427ci LS7 is 23% larger than the 346ci LS6 and the LS6 uses a 204/218 cam. Surely a 218/230 cam is in line with the displacement increase. It could still be emissions compliant. Remember, it's a lot bigger motor and it's putting out well OVER 500 hp. 500hp is just the marketing number. The real number is well OVER 500. Not sure if a 218/220 cam would do it. GM has a habit of putting a heavier bias on the exhaust lobes for production applications. I would look for at least a 12 degree intake/exhaust split. Think about the valves...2.20 intake, 1.62 exhaust.

It was in the write-up on the Corvette Forum. The Vette is putting out around 513hp, but will be rated at an even 500.

That article also mentions the LS7 will be using some sort of tubular, hydroformed header to remove the spent gases....I wonder if GM is going to give us a nice exhaust set up on that beast? Does anyone know if the C5R exhuast ports match up in shape to the LSx series heads? I wonder if the current exhaust headers available for the Vette will actually work with the LS7.

I'd imagine that its going to be placement of the cats that kills any thought of a nice exhaust "header". At best it would be a shorty-style setup, which would be great, but should still leave lots of room for improvement. My gut tells me that this setup is going to be dying for a set of LG LT's

Talking about exhaust, did anyone else pick up on the fact that it will have a bypass (read electric cutout) that will open at higher rpms....

Talk about factory listening to the market. Around town at low rpm the car will be quiet. As you get up in the rpm the exhaust will open up to release a nice growl. That's what I call PIMP.
