LS2 block vs. 6.0L Aluminum Truck block.... what are the differences?

Default LS2 block vs. 6.0L Aluminum Truck block.... what are the differences?

When going after a 6.0L swap, what would the differences be between using the new LS2 block vs. the 6.0L aluminum blocks currently used in trucks? Are they essentially the same?

Also, when using a 402" stroker kit in these blocks, do either of them require any clearancing or are they like the 6.0L Iron block which requires no surgery to go up to a 402"?

Unless something's changed in the past couple of months, the 6.0 truck blocks are cast iron.

Right now, the big issue with the LS2 block is the knock sensors. They won't work in a non-LS2 car and you have to disabled them in the PCM.

According to Chevy Hi Performance, the 6.0L Iron casting was phased out in favor of an aluminum casting for the end of '04 and up.

That would be nice if true. I haven't heard that about the 6.0. The 5.3 I think is now aluminum. It's hard to believe the 6.0 would be far behind, since having a common block for all the 6.0 engines would be a cost saver for GM.

ya he is right they are aluminum and have been for a few months at least, i work on them all the time

So is that pretty much the same as the LS2 block then? How about cost.... still in the same ballpark?

The new 2005 silverados come with all aluminum motors!!! Wich i think is great!!The new improved 5.3L is awsome. THe only thing i dont like is those drum brakes!!!

The 04 6L trucks have an iron block, so do the 05 6L trucks. Not all 5.3s have been switched to aluminum. The SSR was the first vehicle to have the aluminum 5.3, since then, select trucks have an upgrade option (with a price) to get an alum 5.3.

As far as I know, only the LS2 has a 6L aluminum block. If a plain aluminum 6L was available, we'd know about it before CHP.

if you delete the knock sensors from the PCM would that cause a problem after awhile?

This is incorrect. The LQ4 or LQ9 never came with an aluminum block.

You have to drill for an alternator bracket hole on the iron blocks

Wierd, they went backwards because my 00' silverado has 4 wheel discs...must be a cost saving measure.

This can be solved by relocating them to the side of the block with a drill and tap. I dont know that I would want to disable them.
