Default Good Cam for the LS2??

This is for an LS2 that will be going into my 3400-3600lb Monte Carlo SS. The motor is backed by a built 200-4r with a 9.5" lockup 3200stall converter with a 2.45 STR. Out back is a GN 8.5" 3.42 Posi rear. At the track, I will have Hooser Quicktimes, plus all the normal suspension upgrades to get the car to hook.

What would be a good cam to take advantage of the stall? The car sees daily duty in the spring/summer/early fall so nothing too big. I wanna keep it streetable with good driveabilty. I want a cam that doesnt require head/engine mods, besides upgraded springs.

Any suggestions with some power estimates?

The search feature is great but theres just so many to choose from!!

Thanks
Nick

The 3200 stall is gonna be the shortcoming - since it is a lockup, you can go with a lot more stall than that and still have driveablitly. I wouldn't go any less than a 3600 with an LS engine.

I had a 6.0L with unported LS6 heads (basically an iron LS2) in my 3600# F-Body and put down 385 rwhp and ran 11.4's with my custom ground 228/232, 598/598 cam. It had a choppy idle, but with good tuning, it was totally driveable. Lots of area under the curve to move a heavy car.

If you decide you want to go a little on the big side, shoot me a PM - I am selling the cam and brand new dual springs/retainers/seats/seals. I have a 408 on the way, and that cam is way too small for the new motor.

Well I already have the converter...cost me a pretty penny and its not too old. So I'm gonna keep it for awhile. So basically, how big of a cam could I run using it?

Thanks

Just my opinion, but I would recommend something that makes good power from 3000 up. Maybe a 224 or 226 (the 364 cu. in. will soak up cam a little more than a 346). I would talk to Texas Speed - their cams seem to do well from all of the examples I've tuned. I am going with one of their cams in my new 408.

Don't go wild on duration and keep the LSA low. Combine with an early intake closing point and you'll make good power to feed that converter. A 220/220 111 or if you want a little bigger a 226/226 111 +2. If you have stock manifolds, I'd add consider a 216/222 113.

www.futralmotorsports.com The F-12 and F-13 are good cams. Try to avoid to much lift if you are going to daily drive it. If you want to get outrageous purchase a T-Rex cam. Shift points are at 7200

I'm also gonna be working to pass emissions so I can't go too wild. What kind of LSA should I stay with to pass?

What does 111+2 mean? 113 LSA?

Thanks
Nick

The HPE S cam seems to be popular. Big cam, big power and driveable.

How about something like this: Comp Cams LSK 239/243 .649"/.653" 114+1 LSA? or 113+1 depending on the peak.

That'd make insane power on the LS2, and with the added cubic inches, it should be as driveable as a 232/236 or 234/238 cam is on an LS1.

Thoughts?

My opinion on this..... To pass emissions you want your lobe sep min 112, and it would work best to get a 114, 115. I have a couple of cams that you might try::

1.) Z-Plus 220/224 @ .050 .551/.551 lobe sep 114 ......$308.75
2.) Little Thumper 228/228 @ .050 .600/.600 lobe sep 114 .....$354.25
(this cam comes on a 113 lobe sep, but I can order it with a 114 or a 115)

Let me know if I can help!

Yeah lots of LS2's with S cams, and they really seem to run good. with average mods it's an easy 430-440 rwhp (through a 6 speed) cam only setup... Very driveable too. Many of them are daily driven by women.
