Default Maybe the 402 just isnt meant for me...

Wow, yet another road block in the path of running the 402! As some of you know, we have had major oil pressure issues. I finally had a day off work today to look at it. I decided to go for the infamous oil pump o-ring. Radiator comes out, not fluid spilt on the floor....the day starts out perfect. I go to the crank pulley next.....I have always used the puller that threads into the 3 holes on the asp pulley. Well today one bolt breaks off...replaced it and then a different bolt snaps off in the crank pulley. Not too big of a deal, grab the 3 jaw pulley puller and everytime I crank on it, the jaws slide right off the pulley. Dad finally got it rigged up to actually pull on the pulley and it nearly breaks the socket....and the cheater bar is NO help! We are at a complete standstill scratchign our heads over this one. We have pulled that pulley off and put it back on I cant count how many times with no problems whatsoever. Now all of the sudden that pulley might as well be welded on that crank because it is moving one bit!

I really wish I could just pay someone a few hunderd bucks to get this thing running because I am at the end of my patience!! Since we got this new motor, not a single task has gone right. When it goes bad, it goes really bad! Im so frustrated I cant even think about working on it because I know something bad is going to happen. I know its all a part of racing and all but come on, something has to work like its supposed to! I love this car to death, it was my first car but its starting to hate me now! I think its because of the vette but oh well. Its no fun to work on a car for months and months and still cant drive the thing!!

Just venting a little....dont mind me

just go take a break and relax. then come out. i had to do that for my cam swap. then for my head swap. cleaning those little bolt holes was a bastard. you just have to improvise. that is what we DIYers do. good luck.

I feel your pain. My LS2 402 project took a year for completion. Hang in there and do not give up; it will be fine.

What size gear puller are you using? I have never had a problem installing or removing my ASP pulley. A larger puller that is grabbing the backside of the pulley works best for me.

Try heating it up with a propane torch then yank on it with the three jaw puller.

Yeah try the propane torch and you will be good to go... If you have any trouble getting it back on here is a nice trick that I have used a few times with tight balancers..

1) Get a pot from the kitchen...
2) Fill it with water..
3) Place it on the stove on HIGH..
4) Heat the water to a BOIL..
5) Drop the Pulley/Balancer in and cook the **** out of it for a little while..
6) Yank it out with some tongs and go to work with some heat resistant mechanix gloves!!

Sounds retarded, but it works like a dream!! Trust me..

You might consider washing it out after use next time.

We definately heated that pulley up with the heat gun and that sucker will not budge. Something has to be wrong here. That pulley has never given me this much trouble! We are loading it up in the trailer tomorrow morning and taking it to a shop we trust. Hopefully they can get it off and go ahead and fix the oil pressure problem.

Well the oil pressure problem has finally been properly diagnosed. We FINALLY got that crank pulley to come off, got the timing cover and oil pump off. The o-ring showed no signs of being pinched or anything. Got to looking around.....noticed there was an open hole on the front of the block by the oil pump on the right hand side...hmm shouldnt something go right there?? A short look at one of our many manuals and yes that is where the front oil plug SHOULD be.....thats funny, why wasnt this isntalled in the motor before it was shipped to us? Why did they not tell us, hey you need to make sure to get the front oil pressure plug EVEN THOUGH the REAR PLUG came with the freaking motor!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is so so frustrating!! Why would you send the rear plug and not a front plug?!?! This is partly our fault for not knowing there should have been a plug there but come on, those things should be sent with the motor!!

Congratulations. I am pleased the problem was so easily diagnosed.

Unfortunately mine is still not diagnosed. We have the 402 out and everything still looks good. So it is in line at the machine shop to replace the bearings and check the crank.

Now you know why I use my jack handle as a cheater on that crank bolt and also on the pulley to get off the balancer. They are on TIGHT.

Congratulations again,

I will email Jeff Creech that I will shoot him my 402 tune so he can look at that before he tunes yours.
