Gas in PCV catch can?

Gas in PCV catch can? I have an air compressor style water/air separator can from Sears that I use as a pcv catch can and has worked great for years. I went to drain it the other day and noticed the oil inside it looked muddy like water mixed with oil...well when I drain it out it smells like gas mixed in the oil. What could cause gas to get into the pcv system?? The car runs fine and there is no gas in the engine oil and it looks clear. Any ideas?
