To balance or not to balance

Default To balance or not to balance

I just got a LS7 clutch/flywheel assembly and was going to have it balanced but the recomendation of the engine builder was that the factory balance was good enough. I hate to put an unbalanced clutch assembly on a new balanced 402, but if GM is indeed balancing them it could be a waste of time and money. Anyone with any thoughts? Thanks

I have heard that the engines destined for Corvettes are dynamically balanced (running) via pins strategically placed in pre-existing holes*, but that for other applications they are not. *presumably to be transferred if a new flywheel was needed. Nevertheless, the only case I am familiar with, a 2002 Z06, was significantly out: 8 grams on pistons, over 12 on the harmonic damper (plus a ton of run out) Not sure about the crank, flywheel and clutch unfortunately.
I'd call it cheap insurance.

I think you would be fine with the factory balance.

I guarantee you'd pay $40 to have it balanced if you get it in your car and it is out. Balance it.

And what kind of shop can balance a clutch assembly for $40?
I live in Southern California and finding any sort of specialty shop is very hard!

Any machine shop that balances engine components should be able to do it.
