Default LS7 Throttle Body

I decided to disect this to see if I could avoid buying a FAST version when I have a perfectly good one. After defeating the securtiy screws and popping it apart I discovered it is possible to attached something directly to the throttle shaft and attach an arm for a cable. Best part is I think I can use the factory TPS which is concentric on the shaft by sorting out the wires. Nice sealed housing etc.

My excitement ended when I realized that without the drive-by-wire motor I have no idle control. I am planning on using BigStuf3 to run this engine (go Jurt at W2W!) but I am guessing this may be a show stopper. Since the IAC is a glorifed idle passage I could probably solve that with a bypass port and an IAC.

Anyone try any of this?

You could just use the UMI TB which resembles the factory inlet design.

Default LS-7 Throttle body

What I am missing here? Unless you intend to modify your LS-7, it seems to me that the Drive-By-Wire throttle body should be just fine. I know that race sanctioning bodies and most aftermarket tuners' lawyers have said no DBW. Hence the rush to cable conversions for LS-7's. But what is wrong with the DBW that comes with the engine since every Z06 uses it? If you can flash the stock program into the ECM, it should operate OK. Again, am I missing something?

Factory DBW is integrated with many other car sub systems. Also no one has cracked the LS7 PCM yet. S & P has DBW figured out for the LS1 and early LS2 however. With only 150 of these engine running around I suspect few people are going to spend a lot of development time for LS7 PCM support in conversions for old cars. I am going to use Big Stuff3 to get it running and for tuneability in a unique chassis. No DBW support.

I get your reasoning for going to BigStuff3 and I don't blame you. I know however that FAST is currently working on removing the other car sub-systems from the stock LS7 program and for those who use the engine in stock form, it should work with DBW (per FAST). FOrtunatley I have a little more time before the rest of my car catches up with the engine so I can see how the rest of you guys do in the meantime.

UMI Racing has run LS7's with their MEFI systems and 90mm throttle body. Sounds like they are having good success doing it. They ran that engine that made around 650hp.

...And they make the TB too. The LS7 with a stock cam (and dyno tune) made 564 hp with the UMI throttle body...and averaged 4-6 hp more than with the FAST. According to the folks at W2W, the UMI also delivered smoother transitions to/from idle.
