Default LS2 Timing Chain Dampner

Does the LS2 block have a different timing chain dampner than the ls1/ls6? If so, does anyone have the part #? I have heard that it is much cheaper than the ls1/ls6 dampner. Can anyone confirm this?

All of the LS engines from 2004 & up use the same timing chain dampner. It is part# 12588670 and we sell it for $9.95.

I'd like to know if the LS1 block can be drilled and tapped to accept the LS2 damper. I believe the block casting on the LS2 is "slightly" different from the LS1. Anyone have a template to properly locate the LS2 damper?

Checked my 2000 LS1 block last night. The LS2 timing chain damper WILL NOT work. The LS2 must have a revised casting to accept the narrow 1.762” bolt pattern damper. My LS1 block WILL accept the 2.187” damper IF I drill and tap the block.

I drilled and installed the early damp on my 2000. They give you template.

Yeah, I knew they give you a template. I've thought about installing the damper but decided not to.

My car did not have one to begin with and I'm not paying $100 for the damper to fit my block. The timing chain has nothing to do with it. If you are still running your OEM '98 block, you'll need the earlier damper too... if you want to run one.

I figure I'll build a stroker motor BEFORE my new timing chain stretches.

Why is LS1 dampener #88958607 so expensive (~$100) vs the LS2 piece (#12588670) which is only ~$10?

My guess...

GM designed the LS1 for the damper but decided (at the last minute) not to use it. The tooling for the damper existed, so to pay for the tooling the part piece price is high.

My understanding is the LS2 uses the factory damper. Since thousands of LS2's have this, the part piece price is MUCH lower.
