We are working on a new one as well it will be a cnc machined stock cast cover bolted together in the center just like our high quality LS1 covers. Using gaskets not silicone to seal. All gaskets and hardware are included.

I decided not to go with the 2 piece cover, on the LS2 they incorporated a plastic dampener between the 2 sprockets. You cannot get access to the crank sprocket with it on so it would be impossible to line up the timing mark, you cannot see it at all. I'm not sure why they did this. Also, the C6 cam swap is more difficult than the C5, in case anyone cares...

I just took my LS1 with dampener apart and I agree it is damn near impossible to get gear free unless you can cut the cover low enough to get damp bolts out.

I was pretty disappointed to see it in there. My LS6 did not have one, and I love the concept of the 2 piece cover. I guess I could always align the crank before I removed the chain, but the risk is too great to me. I want to see the marks lined up after 2 full rotations.
The damener issue is 2-fold. 1) You cant see the timing mark and 2) you cannot even remove it with the oil pump still installed.
I was thinking about not reinstalling it, but I hadn't heard it done before and did not want to be the first. I doubt it would cause issues.

Couldn't you put an indexing mark on the crank that COULD be seen with the damper (a dampener would make it wet, a damper damps...) in place when you have the cover off to put the 2 piece on? I can't believe the damper completely blocks view of the crank. I'd think a scribe and some permanent machinists dye would do the trick...

I supposed you could index the crank snout in some way, but that would defeat the prupose since you would have to remove the rack to remove the pulley to see the snout.
Until a plan is developed, we are S.O.L.
