Damn, that sucks. I just looked at a picture of mine and the bolt was on the left. Do you have a gear wrench? That might fit back there. I'd hate to see you drop the pan. I've heard to many stories about leaks.

I wonder why/when they changed the location.

I dont have any gear wrenches... But I have box wrenches...

I could not get it on the bolt b/c the angle was wrong.... the wrench was catching up on the drain pan...

what do you think?

That is a real pisser. Do you have a Sears close by, or maybe a Barbor Freight or a buddy with one of these? If I'm not mistaken, dropping the pan only gets you an inch or two since it will rest on the cross member.

hmmm... I will look into getting some of those.

Here is a good picture of what I am dealing with.

(Of course the engine is upside down and the oil pan is off in the pic.)

After looking at what a head this may be...

I think I will try and get the timing right with the dampner and pump still on... (I really don't want to drop the oil pan.) I bet this is how most shops do it anyway. (with LS2's at least)

And after I put the heads and cam in I will turn the engine ove by hand a few times to make sure everything is put together correctly. (Listen for a valve hitting a piston)

What do you guys think about this?

I can barely see the crank dot... (But I figured if I bring piston 1 up to TDC then the dot should be at 12 O'clock. Then I will put the dot on the cam gear at 6 O'clock and I should be set )

Please give me your opinion...

Yes, there is no reason to drop the pan. You will have full view and the less you mess with the less potential problems. No professional shop would would do more than required to be certain it is right.

I agree, line up the dots the best you can, then spin the crank 2 complete revolutions, the crank is on a perfect 2:1 relationship with the cam. If the dots are still lined up after 2 revolutions, your fine. Even if you were off a tooth, it would not necessarily result in diaster, just loss of power.

Good luck.
