You can likely build a LS2 based 402 for that ~price. New short block and some well chosen slightly used parts.

Are you looking for 550 to the wheels or just to the motor? If you want 550 to the wheels you would need a pretty serous build up. A 402 stroker build up would help get there with the right head/cam set up. Most of our sponsers offer complete LS2 short blocks (402 strokers). Toss a set of heads on one of those bad boys and you have your long block. As far as the computer and accessories for the motor good luck, piecing them together would cost a good buck or two.
Your price seemed about right for a LS2 crate motor. I have seen a few guys run well over 400 rwhp with just a cam and bolt ons. So that would be a pretty good/easy route. Buy a crate motor and then toss a cam in it and call it a day.

I think about 450 to the wheel would be fine for me. Do you mind telling me the cam and spec's along with the other bolt on product you were referring to? Is one of the bolt on items a super charger is that a good way to go?

What I meant by bolt on's would be headers, manifold, etc.., I think if you had some head work done with a bigger cam 450 rwhp might be possible with out playing with the short block. Obviously a supercharger would be nice. If this is going into a first gen a roots style blower would fit too which would be nice. I know they make a Eaton M112 which is pretty much whats on a 03 Cobra that would bolt right up to an LS2. I am sure it would push 450 rwhp very easily. I think Magnacharger also makes one for the Lsx motors. They don't fit on 4th gen fbodys because half the motor is under the dash but they usually run them on vettes. I think that would be sweet in a first gen, I seen a set up like that in a 3rd gen already but that guys motor is built up as well (402 stroker). So really it depends on how much money you have to spend. The blower will run you about 4gs or possibly a little more. I say go with a roots style because you wouldn't really have to worry about mounting it since it plops right on top of the motor. Plus I think it would look sick under the hood.

Well, I was saying supercharge it since you brought it up. But if you don't want to go that route put a Fast 90/90 intake and a big cam and your set. Call up one of our sponsers to hook you up with the cam details.
