Default Fly-cutting for the L92 heads - Question

Has anybody fly-cut their pistons for the L92 heads yet? I looks like we're going to have to on my setup.

All help greatly appreciated.

Can you give us an idea of duration and advance? It would help others choose a cam that don't want to flycut.

What piston do you have that requires the extra clearance?
Or is the cam just that damn big?

We've seen a .010" average difference in intake valve depth relative the deck surface between the L92 and LS1 heads due to the larger diameter valve. Be careful when flycutting any piston for L92 head valve clearance! With the close proximity of the top ring land it's very easy to make an accidental gas port into the top ring.
Aftermarket stainless valves virtually all of which have a thicker margin or edge will make p/v clearance a real issue with even mild cam grinds.

Good luck.

I flycut my mahle pistons off the side of pistons and still have plenty of thickness in the crown area. I am running the g5x4 cam and already had heads ported. I called mahle pistons about the flycutting in the crown and they give me the ok. You just need to debur it well. If you all take notice there are alot of pistons out there that have valve pockets off the side of pistons.

I don't want your cam specs for my use...im just trying to get an idea of what is going to fit without flycutting. Quit being such a child about it.

No worries...I was just trying to get an idea of what would fit. I'm not going to put that much cam in my setup when I get it but with as big as that intake valve is I have to wonder what will fit even in the moderate range. Good luck with your build, I look forward to seeing results.

Nate,

If you want to do this then LEARN what it takes to make a accurate guess at that and you can do it on your own then.

Problem here is the 2.200" valve relief that is needed for these intake valves.

Had machine shop cut my valve reliefs and turned out fine. Think you should shop for the thick ring land crown pistons like mahle.

Oh yeah... if there is a Mahle for the application I usually run it. I'm actually cutting up some Isky cutters for customers this week when they get here.
