Default Nascar Spec LS2 in Circle Track Mag

The new Circle Track magazine has an article about a new spec motor. It's a stock cube LS2 built by Carl Wegner. Using CNC'd stock casting heads and stock valve sizes it produced 625 hp at 7000 rpm and 520 lb/ft of torque at 5500 rpm. The motor has 600 hp from 6200 - 8000 rpm. Shows some impressive results for a 2" intake valve, which he said is the limiting factor on the HP.

thats pretty cool. the bad side of it is NASCAR has to run a solid lifter cam, not a roller & limited to like 358CI's. i have been wandering myself how GM would put a gen.III into a stock car.

Actually this motor is using stock hydraulic roller lifters and beehive springs. The motor is a stock 364 ci. This motor is not for the big series, but for like the southwest series cars or something. I don't follow Nascar racing, but Circle Track magazine has some good tech articles.

We just put in an order for 2 of them. We ran the test one for Nascar last year at California. The motor pulled on everyone on the straights. I was very impressed with some of the stock compenents holding up like they did. We will be running the East Busch series with them this year. The only negative with using this motor is they have a gear rule in effect for this motor only, so that you do not wipe the fields *** with it!!!

Will the LS2 motor use the stock plastic LS2 intake with fuel injection or the aluminum four barrel type intake? At one time all ASA cars ran the LS1 motor with the OEM type fuel injection and intake.

We use the carb style intake with I believe a 930cfm carb. You are not allowed fuel injection in Nascar. They are afraid you will use traction control.

The guy who builds those at Wegner's is a friend. We just put a LS7 with L92 heads and a Grand AM cam in his C5 FRC.
Still tuning.

It is using a Edelbrock open plenum intake with a Holley 830 cfm carb. They made their own front cover that uses a Ford distributor, and also mounts a Ford mechanical fuel pump mounted upside down on top next to the distributor, driven off the cam. Kind of some neat stuff. I would scan the article, but the scanner is down. If anyone has any other questions I can keep trickling out more info.

That front timing cover has been in the GMPP catalog for some time now. Just looks strange to see a chevy motor with the distributor up front.

Cool Busa, it's nice to have some 1st hand feedback here. It looks like a similar package to this, with just better heads or bigger valves, could make even more power. Would be nice in a track only car, and approach 2 hp per ci.

You can get is as a crate engine assembled, or you can buy it as a kit. It's available from Provident Race Supply.
Provident Race Supply

That is correct. They gave the motor all the power it wants, so there really isn't any room for cheating. This is why they have the gear rule though to give an advantage to the other teams using a lower horsepower motor. This in effect makes the cars about the same.

GM really did their homework on these engines. It's some serious *** kicking stuff here. I am appalled sometimes at the negativity of the street crowd and the griping they do about stuff. This engine holds up.

The new fiberglass bodies are going to save people a ton of money too.

The guys on my team bitched when we first started using it saying it was a baby engine and would not hold up. After we were done racing they just shut up and did not say a word about it anymore. Some old school guys just don't get it.

What's cool is that now what you buy off the dealer lot is something that's used on the track in professional racing. It's been a long time since that last happened. I

The only bad thing about it is the price of the motor. We just got a quote for 2 kits and they came across for 25K??? For that kind of money I could have 2 bullet proof 427's built. That is the only thing I do not understand, but when the other guys are spending upwards of 40 k on a built motor when they see 25k it seems like a steal.

I'm sure a person could build something similar for less, but that isn't too bad. I would like to see this motor with some worked over L92's. Might be ultimate budget HP.
