Default Use the stock L92 valves or not?

Has anyone heard of any issues using the stock L92 valves? I am building a 408 and will be ordering some L92 heads for it, but I don't want to waste my money on complete heads if the valves won't handle high rpm's and a decent cam.

If so, what valves are you using?

Thanks,

Gary

The stock valves are reputed to be rather heavy, though I haven't seen an actual weight. Currently the only alternative is custom valves, like REV.

The valves are "ok" but the springs, retainers and seals are not good for much. Stock valves are not particualrly heavy for their size. Steel however, not stainless, if that maters.

I just got a new set of Manley stainless valves, they look great.
1.59 Race Master (straight stemmed) exhaust part number 11621
2.165 Race FLO (under cut stem) intake part number 11620
I paid about $300 for the set, seems like a deal to me.
I feel more comfortable using as many "shelf stock" parts as possible so it is easier to find parts when stuff breaks.
My machine shop is slow enough as it is, so the less work I make for them the
quicker I can wrap up the engine build.
Just my 2 cents...
Good luck with your build !!!

That does sound reasonable. And the PN's suggest they are (or will be) an off the shelf item. Good news. Thanks for the info.

Default valves

I have no rock solid information, but have heard through the grapevine that there were some iiues with the oem valves, possibly the tips. I just recieved some Manley valves the other day so we could set tip heights for our cnc ported heads. They look real nice, a little heavy, but not bad. The intake valve was a 2.160 and weighed 115 grams.

Cary,

You heard this about the L92 valves also? I know it has been an issue with the factory Ls7 TI's. I haven't heard about the L92's.

Thanks for all the info guys! It doesn't sound like it's worth buying a complete set of heads if you end up putting all new parts in. Does anyone know if the bare heads have any machine work done to them?

Thanks.

stock valves are fine for na applications, they are lighter than the stainless valves that i have weighed [manley/ rev] 15 grams on the intake valve.

TPIS just finished my 427 with L92 heads. Ordered Manley valves and they are 15 grams more then the stock ones, also TPIS just weighed the REV valves same weight as the manley valves. Used stock L92 valves 670 hp. No problem with valve train at 7300 rpms.

What valve springs are you using?

Am I summing this up correctly?
Stock valves: re-released versions seem to be ok now and they are lighter than the aftermarket equivalents, but they aren't stainless.

Verdict: Stocks are the best for NA cars where material isn't a big issue and SS is probably the best for turbo use?
