Default Livernois Motorsports LS2 540hp

"Here's a look at the throttle body adapter that Livernois put together for this test. While they pirated the elbow from Dan's 6-second 10.5W-tired Outlaw Mustang, it worked quite well on our 540-horse small-block Chevy. The technicians at Livernois promised us that you will be able to buy this same setup for your car by the time this story runs- elbow, fuel rails, adapter-the whole thing."

"The results are in-the L92 heads and carbureted intake rock! They produced 545.8 horses at 6,900 rpm and 453.8 lb-ft of torque at 5,200 rpm. The L92 carbed intake gives up some torque down low-no surprise there-but it gains it back on the top end with a peaky power band. This is your race car intake, folks, no questions about it."

Being newbie, please explain why more people building engines do not use use the "Metal" L92 Intake? It seem to work significantly better than the "Plastic" L76 intake?

Look again at the dyno graphs in that story, and look carefully at the tq/hp labels and not just the curve shape. The caption in the story is flat out misleading - the single plane does not "give up a little torque down low", it gives up as much as 40 ft-lb over most of the power band, in exchange for a few more hp up top. On a 7500 RPM pure race motor, this may be what you want, but on a street engine, especially in a heavier car, swapping this intake in would make the engine feel like a dog in comparison to the L76.

If this being the case I guess this might work for a 2500lbs GTM used for hillclimbs and track days?

Increase runner length and you increase torque for a given app. Opposite is true, also.

From my experiences on the track, if it was purely a choice between the two engines in the story, I'd choose throttle response and torque over a few more peak HP. My engine spends a lot more time between 4000 and 6500 than it does at 6500+ on the track.

But in that car, I'd be tempted to build an engine for more revs - get a set of ported L92s, stretch the cam another 6-8 degrees over the Livernois combo, upgrade the rod bolts and lifters, and shoot for peak HP at 6800 - 7000 with a 7500 redline. Then the single plane intake makes a lot more sense, although if you can swing it an individual throttle body setup would be even better, and look really cool in that car.

it does say that this is the "racecar" intake...at the track with some 4.10's this setup could give you a few more 1/10ths as the car would hover around 5200 rpms after each shift. but for a street car i agree that this is not the best way to go.
