Default Foundation (block) for next setup

I am thinking the next setup will be either an Iron block, LS2, or L92. No LSX due to price. I want to use a Compstar 4" crank and rods, and solid roller setup. That's about as far as I have thought it through so far.

What block would make the best choice AND WHY for NA power?

I'd go with the LS2 4.125 Katech block - can''t beat their attention to detail and the prep work (vacuum impregnation).

LS2 - the research isnt all there for the L92 yet. LS2 can be done at a GOOD price and make GOOD power.

We can set ya up with something good Steve!

he's talking about a stock block, not resleeved.

I'm debating the same thing at the moment, but I'm going to use a stock crank. really, the only decision to make is if the extra 13 cubes is worth and extra ~500 or so. LS2 vs L92/LS3

no way would I do an iron block. way too much weight for no gain except that its the cheapest.

Oh, okay.
But why not go with the resleeved Katech 427 block??

I would go with the L92 block since it has a larger bore. It can use larger valves without shrouding.

well since he said no LSX because of price then the katech block is out of the pictuire since its about 1000 more than the LSX.

since he said 'No LSX due to price' in the original post, Im assuming a block that cost more than an LSX would be over his budget.

the resleeved LS2's have a bigger bore and make more power, and not just because of the additional cubes. they un-shroud the valves more. they are also beefier when resleeved, i think most that have seen the L92's haven't been impressed with the quality (alignment of bores).

I'm starting to think LS2 factory block. The resleeved option looks great but we need to do this on a shoe string. This build is about 2 years a head of schedule.

if on a budget, i'd get the L92 for cubes and mainly to unshroud valves/heads.

i'm going with a L92 with a 4"crank and 6.125" rods. definitely nice to have the extra cubes! good luck!

I'd say it kind of depends on what heads you're planning to use. If you're looking at the L92's then I'd go with the L92 block since the bigger bore will take full advantage of the large valves in those heads. If you're looking to use cathedral ports with typical valves then it may be worth the extra money for the L92 block, the LS2 will do fine.
People make good power with the L92 heads on the LS2 bore but it's my opinion that you'll see a sizeable jump with the bigger L92 bore. A big enough jump to be worth it.

BTW your old AS heads are doing fine. I think I finally got a clutch that'll let me see what the car can really do at the track. Thanks again.

Good to hear they are doing well. I did not think I would be putting a new one together so soon.

I'm thinking High compression LS2 block, Big Solid Roller and ETP 255 or 265 heads.

I am not sold on the L92 heads yet. THe deck surface is too thin.
