I would only go up to a 4.185" bore and use a 4.125" to get your 454ci. You will have to many issues with head gaskets on a 4.250" bore and have room to clean up the bore if you have any problems later. Is your rwhp goal using an auto or 6-speed? I would assume you want to use pump gas ?

ya pump gas, i was thinking of getting a new 09 camaro, but now i have really been thinking of going with a used vette and tossing the new lsx block in it... i guess it doesnt have to be a 454, just looking for some good numbers. probly could go with the taller deck instead of the 9.26
thnx for the input

A tall deck block is going to be even more costly considering the custom headers, custom internals, and intake you'll need. Plus space is already a premium...I would imagine it could fit under the stock hood but you're opening up a big can of corn and unless you have a really big budget then I don't think you realize what you're getting yourself into.

The tall deck would probably run over 24k to get installed and tuned with heads and intake that will actually make the power you're seeking.

If you just want 500 rwhp then get a 402 and some nice AFR or ETP heads and call it a day. You won't have to deal with the extra weight of the iron block and it will be a lot more cost effective option.

guess i didnt think about that route, that lsx is just nutz, but if my goals arent at the full potential of that motor its probably better to go with an LS2 based block. i was saving for an 09 camaro, but the money saved by going with a used vette with like 30k ish miles would leave an engine budget of 6-10 thousand. anyone know some decent vendors to go thru for like an assembled block, or maybe even a crate 402. i still have plenty of research to do, and suggestions are welcome :-)

Listen to Allan.... We found the only available head gasket was a Cometic at 4.185. (should say the largest)

You can go bigger on the bore...but you will need to run copper gaskets with an o ring of some type. If I was going to run a NA only race engine I would go bigger than the 4.185 and use copper. But for a street or power adder car I would want to play it safe.

What about a 427, that will get you 500-650rwhp n/a. What are you looking for?
Lots of horsepower?
1/4 time?
Street/ strip car?
etc....?

The reason i am asking these questions is because you might not need that much horsepower for your car to do what you want to do...

If you build a vette, why on earth would you add all that weight in the front.
Think carefully, first choose what you want the car for and then think mods.
(it is just that putting more weight on a Vette defeats its purpose IMO)

basically looking to build a very strong street/strip car. weight in the front end is another thing i hadnt really thought about yet. anyone know off hand how much more the iron block would weigh vs an aluminum. also how well does the corvette rear hold up to abuse, is a 12 bolt outa the question in a vette because of the irs? a late model f-bod isnt out of the picture for me, but i think i would much rather have a vette.

the lsx weighs 225ish. me and the padre are possibly going to build a nasty easy 10 sec 454 in a year or 2.

If you want a Vette and your goal is just inbetween 500-600 rwhp, there are many, many easy ways to do it. You can have as much power as you want, but it will cost you more and more.

At each power level below ~600 you have many different choices, above that, your choices become more limited.

i say go with an ls2 402 shortblock with a set of tfs 225 heads with something like 12:0 scr and a cam like a 250/257 and a ported fast 90/90 and you should be around 550 rwhp or so. when you start getting into the big cubes like 427 + regular heads and intakes start getting pretty restrictive.

Whats regular heads? Couldnt you use WarHawk LS7x heads for a 427, or the GMPP LSX heads, i am not sure that would be restrictive esp if you get a valve job, and a port and polish. Match that with a ported LS7 intake or even better a sheatmetal intake with a 105mm tb...

What is very strong, 11's, 10s, 9s ??

Yes rear will have to be beefed.
Yes you can swap a straight axel, but then again, why buy a vette unless you only drag.
