The tall deck would probably run over 24k to get installed and tuned with heads and intake that will actually make the power you're seeking.
If you just want 500 rwhp then get a 402 and some nice AFR or ETP heads and call it a day. You won't have to deal with the extra weight of the iron block and it will be a lot more cost effective option.

You can go bigger on the bore...but you will need to run copper gaskets with an o ring of some type. If I was going to run a NA only race engine I would go bigger than the 4.185 and use copper. But for a street or power adder car I would want to play it safe.

The reason i am asking these questions is because you might not need that much horsepower for your car to do what you want to do...
Think carefully, first choose what you want the car for and then think mods.
(it is just that putting more weight on a Vette defeats its purpose IMO)
At each power level below ~600 you have many different choices, above that, your choices become more limited.
Yes rear will have to be beefed.
Yes you can swap a straight axel, but then again, why buy a vette unless you only drag.
