Default 427 cam

Alright to start I have a warhawk 427 and LS7 heads and intake on the way. I HAVE A 99 TA M6 3.89 9 inch I am going to install. All my parts have been purchased through sponsors of this forum. I have not ordered a cam as of yet as every time someone asks about some advice it turns into a pissing match slamming what the poster is looking for! If I was building a regular old small or big block I know exactly what I would want. However, I am building a LS7 based motor and am looking for some input from the people who have tested some of these parts.

I want a cam that will be able to drive on the street but, am going to autox and do some road racing. I will run this at the dragstrip but, not looking for the ultimate ET. Just for fun. All my racing will be just for fun. I plan on having a local tuner tune it who seems to be pretty respectable from what I've seen and heard from many people on this site. I'm figuring a 240/250 duation .600 lift 112-114 LSA would be a good cam for this set-up. I am wanting some experienced suggestions from people in the know. I will need most of the valvetrain (cam, lifters, pushrods, possibly springs, etc.).

Please give me your suggestions and don't let this become a bash of what I am not trying to do. I think other people are looking for some feedback like me. The search doesn't really give me the answers I am looking for and none of my emaiuls to some sponsors have been returned. So lets hear the suggestions.

I think that you are in the ballpark at 240 intake duration, that would probably be a big bad street cam that would make good power. I am buying LS7 heads for a 427 road race car that I can drive to the track. The TSP Texas Giant 248/254 looks great for me. I need to make peak power at 6000, redline at 6800 max.

Bruce,
We started our Warhawk test program on the LS1X heads with a cam similar to your intended selection. As testing progressed we stepped-up to a .637/.657-248/254 w/111LSA. We tested with both 870 and 1050 cfm. The cam alone improved 36HP and 24LbFt. The 4500 was consistently 12HP better than the 4150.

It "drove" fine on the dyno but may be more aggressive than you care for on the street. Or not.

Are you running the Warhawk ls7 heads or the GM ls7?? If the gm heads, take a quick peak at the GM cam that they have now. If I am not mistaken it is based on, or the same thing as the Katech Track Attack cam. You will not be disappointed by it.

I have ordered the GM LS7 427 heads and intake from sdpc. My Warhawk is about a week and a half away. Now if the car would just stay together for a few more weeks. Thats what happens to a 150,000+ mile vehicle.

I looked at the Warhawk test a bunch and wonder how that cam would be on the street as far as idle quality? I am going to order a cam next week. Still on the fence but, I'm getting it narrowed down.

Bruce, nothing wrong with the cam that Merlin suggested, if you are planning on running LS1 style heads.

You will be running LS7 heads and intake. That is a completely different animal, and as such does not like it's food served to it the same, if you get my drift.

What would be different with a GM LS7 CNC heads that flow 360 cfm?
A cam with more duration / less, more lift / less. I am looking at LS7 heads for a road race car just like where this thread started. What are some opinions of the proper care and feeding of a LS7 head 427.

CompCams is doing a custom grind for the 427 I'm putting together. I went with the ETP LS7 heads (1.8 Jessels) and compression will 12.5 to 1. Specs for my cam are 242/248 642/648 111+0 LSA on a XE profile. I hope to make peak power around 63-6400 and shift around 6800.

The LS7 heads have a LARGE intake valve. As such they flow big numbers rather easily. In comparison, the exhaust side is relatively poor. The down side of this is they fall victim to reversion rather easily with too much intake duration. A good cam for these heads will have a large split and actually be comparatively small on the intake side. Look at the Katech Street Attack cam and the GM stg. 3 hot cam for these heads

Street Attack 220/244 I forget the lift but the LSA is something like 118??
STG 3 233/276 on a 107.

Agreed optimal on LS7 heads is going to be different from optimal on LS2/6/1 style heads.

Talk to LG Motorsports or Katech for the cam you want. As Stang says I think you will find more split and LSA is closer to what you want.

LARGE intake valves are an understatement. I got my heads and those valves are I went with a 238/254 .600 112 lsa. We'll see how this works out.

I agree with the big split cams for making more peak power in a LS7 and if you have a six speed to keep you on that peak longer it's great. But for an automatic a smaller split will give you more average power under the curve and I feel that will be faster especially in a heavy vehicle like my truck.

With my 427 w/ LS7 heads I ran a 230/248 .630/.648 112 +2. It was very streetable with moderate lope. These LS7 heads LOVE lots of traditional split so keep that in mind.
