Default Weight diffrence between iron 6 liter and ls2

Im looking into doing a 402 for a forced induction setup, but I need some input or your guys thoughts. I was running a forged 346 and putting down about 620 rwhp. I really enjoyed this motor but unfortunatly it is not salvagible except for the lunati pro billet rods. I was going to rebuild a 346 but when I looked at the big picture I would spend a bit more for a 402.
So my next question is should I go iron or ls2?
I am trying to do a budget build but its looking like it may not turn out like that. I would have to get new front, rear covers and lifter trays. so would it be worth it to go aluminum.
What are the weight diffrences between the two, I plan to stay around the same hp levels until I upgrade my fuel setup which may be a while, and I really dont want to add the weight.
Thanks for all of your help
Brian

The LS2 does have thicker sleeves than the alum LS1/LS6 block but I don't think strength wise anything would last better than the iron block.Sux its so heavy though

I know that the LQ4 block is just about 80 pounds heavier than the LS1 blocks. Weighed both. I am not sure the difference between a LS1 and a LS2, but it can not be that much.

We have weighed an iron block vs a big block chevy and the iron 6.0L block is actually 15 lbs. heavier.

When I saw this I went in the shop and was going to weigh each.....but our big scale was being used, Ill try and get back later and get an exact diff.

That really isn't surprising. The gen3 iron block is a beefy bitch which will lift the heads long before you overpower the block. I've seen stock block BBC motors fail at 700hp. Plus is you look at how the mains are assembled between the two, it's easy to see where some of that weight comes from.

Every 100 pounds equates to a 0.10 slower et in the quarter mile. Are you really that worried about <100 pounds? I think in $ invested as the determining factor myself.

Not if you get a 402 LS2 short block from SDPC or TSP cause it comes with all stuff to swap it in place of an LS1. Maybe some other sponsers are offering the same also.

That is exactly what it came out to when I weighed them. 87 for an ls1 block vs 180 for an iron block. I would imagine a LS2 would be the same weight or maybe even slightly less than an ls1 due to the larger bore.

I was trying to cut some weight so I sold my iron 402 and installed a L-92 based block 418...100 pounds is still alot of weight on the front end...

weight on the front end is the key.

weight in front of the spindles is worth twice as much... weight behing the driver is almost pointless... anything infront of the driver in a door car is worth taking out.

Weber , you said a iron big block is 15lbs less than a 6.0 ? I've never weighed them but factory big blocks are well over 200lbs and aftermarket blocks are 250-275lbs . The new LSX block from GM is heavy for a small block @ 225lbs .
