the tq is a spike on the dyno, but trust me, anything that spikes that high is gonna run like a **** at the track, obviously what the guy's worried about with that tranny/converter setup.

But yes, a 12 bolt, slicks, steel driveshaft, 3 speed, big gear, and a loose unlocked converter will eat up A LOT of HP.

well the old motor was a 408, and through the th-400 we were right over 400 hp, so this motor is well over the old setup and should run good for us

If you're trying to compare trans to trans, you cant do any type of comparison without locking the converters in both types of trans, and then measuring the power loss.
I wouldnt think a th400 would absorb any where near that much power.
The stall is what will act like the sponge.
