I'm building an LSX for school
The biggest reason for this is that your choices are limited by your money. You say you want 650-700 hp. Is that rwhp or bhp?? Either way, with a procharger, either is obtainable.
For 650-700 BHP, I would go with the 427(actually I would go this way for either), L-92 heads, L76 intake, custom blower cam,and a D1 procharger. Go with a Callies Compstar crank and rods and Diamond pistons. Size your piston dish to achieve a ~9.5 compression ratio and have fun. Should make great power, be relatively inexpensive and be dead nuts reliable.(As far as FI goes!!)
First is head gasket. With a 4.4 bore spacing, gasket material between cylinders is minimal at anything over 4.125" Hell even at that, there is not much there. For a boosted application, this is a serious issue. For a NA application, it is not as much of a concern. My next engine will be a 454 or bigger if I use a tall deck block.
Second, in a boosted application there is really no need for more bore than 4.125. At that bore you can already use the every head available and that many cubes will support whatever blower you want to throw at it for a street application. There are tons of people running F-1R on 408's and even smaller. A 427 will give more than enough power under the curve, and it wil be sufficient with a well thought out top end to max out any of the street sized blowers and will support even bigger ones in race applications.
Third, I just like the way 427 sounds better than 454. 427 says race car, 454 says one ton
