I bought a 1999 Chevy truck 6.0L engine with cast iron heads. Should I build it or get a newer 6L to build? I am putting it in my 55 BelAir. I want about 450 HP and livable gas millage. I also have two 5.3 truck engines for parts. Should I use those alum heads (shaved .030) or what? Bore the 6L .030 or what? What cam, I'm going to run a 4L60.
Remember...streetable BelAir.....HELP, Tim

i wouldn't use the iron 6.0 heads. if you're planning on running the 5.3 heads, you'll have to have them ported and opened up for the 4" bore. by then you'll have quite a bit of money into those heads when you could have Patriot stage 3 6.0 heads for $1,295.00 (shipped!). they'll make the power you're looking for. i'd probably just try and sell the 5.3 heads to someone who's looking to do a high compression stock bore build.
as far as the cam is concerned - if you want a REALLY streetable car with good gas mileage and a lot of torque - Speedinc designed a cam for the trailblazer SS with the ls2. it's specificallyl designed to make a ton of torque down low to get the heavy trucks moving... they work very well and with the patriot heads, i think it would be a great package. good power/torque, very civil and good gas mileage.

Thanks,
This is the kind of advice that I was looking for. I've looked into the Patriot heads and I like the specs. Also I'll check on the cam.....Thanks

I would run the freakin' Iron heads!! While they are a different material, they have basically the same ports as the LS6 heads. 5.3 ports aren't that great, they just have the smaller chambers for more compression.
See if you can get a set of LS3 pistons from GM, then bore the block .060" over with stock rods and crank and voila! Cheap 370ci! 450hp should be no problem and still take a cheap pump gas.

yeah,
The 5.3 stuff i would sell. The Iron heads arent terrible but something like the patriot 6.0 heads or maybe l92s from GM would be a huge improvement. With the better heads/more compression- you could run a mild cam and be 450 easy.
