Default Big Problems at the Dyno tune shop

So come to find out that the cam I have in the car is to Big to run the car in closed loop. So I need it to be tuned open loop, no longer need the MAF or O2 sensors. I never got any Dyno numbers because the tuner is convinced the cam is to big for my application. So we diden't finish the tune.

It looks like my options are to have it tuned open loop, and deal with the issues that brings or put a smaller cam in and deal with a lower end powerband.

I'm with the post above. It can be tuned to idle perfect at 850 RPM with the right tune. Also, I think you have the open loop closed loop switched around. You meant to say couldn't be tuned in closed loop, only open loop.....which is Speed density.Traver

Also the cam specs are;

gross valve lift in .613 ex .596
durration @ .050 in 252 ex 262
Lobe sep 114+2

Also for a daily driver is this cam going to burn thru gas like no tommarow?? will it have a decent low end??

The tuner was telling me that the cam has to much overlap, that at idle its dumping raw gas down the exhaust that in turn tells the O2's its running rich so it cuts the fuel. So he wanted to tune is open loop but he was saying that weather and change in temperature would effect the tune and drivability of the car. They recommended I go with a cam with little more lift and less overlap.

Open loop and speed density are not mutually inclusive...you can run speed density in closed loop, and you can run a MAF in open loop.

As for a cam being hard to tune with a MAF, that's not too surprising...MAF sensors don't like cams with lots of overlap...neither do O2 sensors.

Nice looking car. It looks kind of like a sleeper until you start it.

Get a wideband O2 and tune it open loop. Start out speed density and then later you can go back to the MAF. After your VE table is tuned recalibrate the MAF.
LPE sells a 100mmm MAF that is shielded on the TB side - to help with reversion pulses. Louis @ LGM says it works very well....compared to stock 85mm MAFs.
FWIW.

BTW -Great job on the car and engine.

A little more info...

The cam was designed around a LS7 top end in the future. Andrew and I talked and we figured 1.8 rocker's were going on with the new top end. So the cam was maybe one of the hardest cams I suggested over the past year or so. Trying to get a cam to work for now, be street friendly, in a 454 that no body had done before, and still work well once the switch was made to a better top end and 1.8 rocker's was a challenge to say the least.
Sure we could have picked a better cam for now, but then there is a 100% chance of a cam swap later.
I think given the goal's, and the challenge the cam picked was a good choice. With a 454 cubic inch motor and the large stroke the bottom end power should just murder the tires and have a great power/TQ curve.
We are in Florida and drastic weather changes are not something we deal with (except rain) however we have plenty of big cam tunes under our belt many of which still get great gas mileage, and are daily drivers.
I have no knowledge of the tuning shop Andrew went to but had heard they were good tuner's. I don't doubt that for a minute, and still feel they more then likely are good tuner's, but maybe not experienced with big cam's. So if your a fellow sponsor within a few hours or Portage Wisc and have plenty of speed density tuning/tuning cars with good sized cam's please PM Andrew.
I would love to help him get his car where he deserves to have it.

Andrew want to learn how to tune?
LOL, might be a tough car to make your first.

I have seen this MAF but have seen very few people/shops try it out as of yet.
I might have to look into what LG has used it on and see how it worked. I was considering telling Andrew about this but I hate selling some parts that are not proven. (especially MAF sensor's)

My 1st tune -> 239/251, 106 LSA in a 346 Vette- electronic TB. This was before VE tuning was established. The guys on this board were a huge help...I couldn't have done it without their help (NoGo is the MAN! ).
It's much easier now. Give it a try?
