Cam walk issues?

Default Cam walk issues?

Heres the situation. Some 07 LS2's have a single cam bolt from the factory. They also have a really goofy chain damper. A while ago we swapped a cam in one of my personal vehilces. To do this we used a 06 3 bolt cam gear with appropiate number of relutctor pulses. We normally also swap to the other design cam damper but in this one case we didn't. We are not sure if this is why we are seeing the problems we are.

Fastforward to this week. The engine started picking up a cold tap or slight valve train knock. It really sounds like an old SBC with a loose rocker and only is there for the first 10 min of run time. We checked all the valve springs and they are all good. We then pulled the front of the engine apart and found the forward edge of the cam gear to have a burr on it and signs of heat & wear (where the chain rides). We also a good bit of wear on teh front of the cam retainer plate and corresponding wear on the back of the cam gear.

We haven't found anything that would make a tap sound but I'm wondering if we wheren't hearing the cam walk or tap.

I was wondering if anyone else had any issues like this. I'll try to get pictures tomarrow.

We are putting it together with another cam (in case there was something wrong with the core) and all 06 timing chain items... New cam retainer plate, cam gear, chain, and the right damper for the cam gear.

Sorry that I can't help you out with the cam walk question but if you kept the oil after you removed it run a magnet through it to see how much metal is in it. I would cut the filter apart and look at the filter media as well. The metal that is worn from the items mentioned had to go somewhere. I'm sure you have thought of this already.

was your cam sproket for a '05+ LS7 motor, because that's what you should use.
