You would want to ask them some custom cams already have degree made into them like 112+4 +4 begin the degrees of advance

You can do it to check against the cam card. If you don't have an adjustable timing chain, you can't change anything if it is not to spec. I've installed several of Ed's cams dot to dot w/o any issues.

I've put 5 cams in my car and always used the dot to dot. All cams were fine with the dot to dot method.

If you don't degree it you can't be sure it's right. It's that simple.

If pretty close is okay-then you'll probably be okay.

You can buy an adjustable timing set to get it nailed down.

That's exactly how I feel. A little time spent, and you have the satisfaction of KNOWING it's right on.

Or, in my case MORE THAN ONCE, needed to be tweaked a couple degrees. And, some time back, had one (stock rebuild) engine that would barely even run. Marks were that far off. Lucky there wasn't any damage.

I cam doctored one of Eds cams for a customer, since the customer wanted to know what the actual specs was and it was not what was on the cam card. It was a degree big on the intake and 3 off on the exhaust. The lsa was lower and had more advance than was supposed to be. Ed told us tough ****, so I would degree it so you know what kinds of valve events your cam has.

I agree you can do it dot to dot and it may run and run well, that does not mean that it is optimized. I have done or helped many cam installs on LS1s and done it dot to dot. I have since been doing some reading and dot to dot does not optimize your cam. You have to check valve events to be sure...and if possible test it degreed 2 - 4* advanced and retarded to get your optimum postion. My $0.02
