Default the damage of racing..

had a diamond piston come apart... posted the carnage ..at least some of it...
any ideas on what may have caused this? motor was always n/a...maybe went lean on number 7....dont really know but .. i ordered a new ls7 block a few days ago..so there is a silver lining...as long as the heads can be fixed

Man that sucks....looks like a ring land cracked and caused all the nicking damagin the combustion chamber. I had the same thing happen to my Lt1 on the #7 but I was runnign a 150 shot. Detonation is what most likely caused it. Or the spark plug fell apart inside the combustion chamber.

Looks like it lifted the ring land then started to beat itself to death. How do you know it went lean? What type of timing was the motor running at?

Geeze how far did you drive it liek that? I would think that would have to be pretty lean to do that on an NA motor.

I feel your pain though I just ordered an new piston from diamond yesterday. Mine got slightly melted in the same spot and caused the ring to seize up. I caught mine really early though so I didn't get any damage to the head or cylinder walls. I posted pics of mine in the boosted section.

well i dont know for sure what happened....they are not new pistons ,the motor had 6 seasons on it...about 11.3cr 28 degrees of timing...was tuned on the dyno to 12.8 afr,42# inj,... racetronix kit.... motor went consistant 11.0s .... everything was fine top of second gear..boom..s^& happens when you race i guess.. i really not sure what happened everything seemed fine till that point in time...

I've leaned out a few engines (snowmobiles & cars & boats) and they don't look like that. Was that a stroked motor? That's a mechanical failure. I saw a race car fail like that because the bearing wore away and the piston went up high enough to catch on the upper cylinder block lip (it had no ring chamfers) When you lean one out, it lookks like you held a sandblaster at the center of the piston and let it eat through. They tend to melt in the center first. Its possible you over heated the metal and it softened. Piston manufacturer could say for sure...

I am currently building a new motor after my new one came apart. It gives me a sinking feeling seeing that.

Is the head repairable?

etp told me they were repairable and r opening them up for me to use on the new motor

Cool! I am assuming they are opening the chambers. Will you be changing over to a large bore motor?
