Default Head alignment dowls

I have a dilema, while watching a video of a build when they were putting the heads on I suddenly realized I'm not sure I pit dowls in mine, I remember taking them out of the old block but can't remember if I put them in the new as I did studs so it held everything. Is there any way or lines that I can tell without pulling the damn heads off 🤦‍♂️

Do you see the old set laying around there anywhere? There’s no way of knowing without pulling the heads, or at least back the headbolts off a decent amount and see if the head will move around with a rubber mallet.

No I can't find them anywhere I put them which makes me think I put them in, I feel like I would have only removed them to install them I just can't remember doing it for sure lol been a 2 year long build

If you remove the spark plugs, can you rotate the engine easily?
I forgot to install one of the dowels on mine. Mine is a Gen V that has the one large head bolt. I used all studs and forgot to use a dowel.
I put on one head and torqued it, installed the lifters and pushrods, rockers. Started rotating, --clank--the valve was hitting the valve relief on the piston. It cost me a head gasket, but dodged the bullet. Just that little bit of misalignment caused a big problem. You may not have a high lift cam, but I would still check it.

Engine has been run and drove a dozen times no issues. Just has me stressed now because I can't remember. Running a sloppy stage 2, no irregular noise. I wonder if the stud was removed if you'd be able to see the sleeve or misalignment with a bore scope in the bolt hole

That’s a thought. Worth a try. I bet they are there, you just don’t remember seeing or messing with them. I can’t tell you how many times through the years I’ve second guessed how I oriented the headgaskets on soooo many builds.

I'm like 80 percent sure they must be lol I specifically remember using a drill bit to remove them from the old block to not crush them, and I would only be removing them to install them so would think they are in. But the not knowing drives me crazy lol but not crazy enough to want to pull a head to look lol
