Default Ls 1 overheated and turns over but does not start.

Hello I have a 2005 Chevrolet Lumina 5.7 v8, which has the ls 1 motor in I stay in South Africa. I am finding it difficult to get any information on this matter. The car overheated and blew out some smoke and was dead. I towed it back home and started it after it cooled down it started idle for 5 seconds and then died. After that the engine turns but does not start. A local shop told me that the car has a bearing knock, which I am not sure is correct as my understanding goes the car will still then be able to start? I have little knowledge about engines and would like any help in this regard.

drain the oil and see if the oil is milky or not. also check the coolant condition in the radiator and see if it also looks milky/slimy. but it sounds like the motor's spun a bearing.

The motor overheated due to a whole in the coolant reservoir tank where the water leaked out while driving and the oil had metal shavings is what the local shop told me.

They did not say. Will try to find out from them. I have subsequently put in oil again as they only did diagnostics and did not replace the oil. Will it help if a drained the new oil again to see if I find shavings or should I look at the oil filter maybe? What type of shavings is bad news for me?

cut open filter. if you see gold/bronze colored stuff in filter/oil pan, motor's most likely toast.
