My idea of "new" is LT1 I'm an old car guy... I'm not old, but the cars I like ARE. 
My idea of new is an LT1. After spending the last 10 years working in a traditional hotrod shop, that's saying something. For a while there, overhead valves were "new" to me.
So, anyway, I just picked up a 67 LeMans that I'm turning into a road racer. For now I'll use the stock frame with multiple chassis upgrades, but eventually (when I rob a large bank) I'll go this route... www.gmachinechassis.com
I tried long and hard to think of a lightweight engine that would get me to 450-500 hp at the crank that wasn't an LS1 because (no offense) its a pretty common swap these days. But it is hands down the best choice.

Welcome Curtis! This is Sean. The LT1 would still be a lot of fun, especially if you wanted to boost it. Then again 6.0 iron LQ9/4 motors are getting really cheap (I just like the iron LSx blocks for durability). In fact some one correct my if I'm wrong, but there is a guy that ran a junkyard 6.0 long block with a turbo at 825rwhp, and got a heavy GTO into the 9s. I bet that LeMans has plenty of room for a 6.0 and a turbo too!

I've never owned a LT1 but have drove one, it sure was a torque monster. No power up top but it was fun to drive, when you floored it, she just spun the tires til there was nothing left up top and took off. You really should look into the LSX series engines so you can find both torque and hp and find what you're truly looking for 
I think the consensus was around 80lb. I went from the L98 TPI in my 1989 Formy to a LQ4 (FE) and the front end lifted about 2" though.
The LS1 is definitely lighter, but I think even with the iron block the front end might come up a bit in the lemans, more so with the LS1.
