I have a 69 Firebird 400 4 speed. Was an automatic that I just converted to a M20. I also have a LS1 and Auto out of a 2001 Trans Am sitting in the Garage. But since I put the 4 speed in mine there is no way I am putting an automatic back in it. So I believe it will be an LS Muncie swap. I am ignorant so I will probably have a ton of questions.

If the car is a daily driver, or if you want to drive long distances with reasonable economy,
you will want an overdrive transmission. Either the six speed or the 4l60/80e transmission will suffice.
Also, What is the vehicle weight? Economy is directly affected by weight, and changes plans regarding parts robustness.

A ram air IV cam with 3.42 gears is all you need for performance. If you really want to wake that car up get a Comp Cams XR288HR but ground on a 112 lobe separation, ATI tree master convertor for an automatic and you will be deep in the 12's on street tires on pump gas. The comp cams will require hydraulic roller lifters though.
What heads are on the 400 now?
I had a 79 ta with 455, edelbrock heads. At a race weight of 3525 I ran low 12's at 113mph with shitty short times, 1.8-2.0. If I could have gotten it to hook I would have been in the 11's.

Yes I know a Pontiac will run. I had one 30 years ago. The engine in this car is a 557 block unknown cam 6x-8 heads. So weak block and low compression heads. So if I want to do anything with it. I should get a better block. The heads would work on a 455 but the Edelbrock heads would be much better. So Heads and block would set me back about 3000 if I go Edelbrocks. That is before any machining or bottom end parts. I have a good running LS-1. So the numbers say stick the LS in and put the pontiac in storage.
