Keep your eye out for complete vehicles, Sometimes you can pick them up at a reasonable price when they are wrecked or have other issues but stll have a good engine and trans. Salvage auto auctions might be another option, Around here you can inspect them and usually hear them run.

Try these guys, not too far off 77. I got my 5.3 for 550, engine only. It would have ran I'm sure but I wanted to build an engine.

They are only as crazy as you make them, I did a 73 Nova that was really simple 6.0 4l80e swap and I did a frame off swap in a 2000 S10 with a LSA supercharged 6.0 with LS9 Cam and TR6060 6-speed and narrowed frame to fit wide tires
Painted everything that wasn't painted already rebuilt the complete suspension.

I'm 56 years old there is sooooooooooo much to learn. Gone are the days of Chevy 350, stroker 383 or in my case 455 Buick. I think if I pick one motor that will help to reduce the data over load I'm feeling. I will look into the intake carb combo and the msd box. Yes pump gas Thanks
This is the same 5.7 they used in the 2004 Corvette with minimal differences.
If you're looking at spending several thousands of dollars, why not go with a legit LS1?
As far as Transmissions, a 4L65e will fit under the dog house with no modifications. So, when you decide which transmission your going to use, be careful. Some dog houses won't accommodate the 4L80's without cutting into it.

Those engine prices seem a bit high but you didn't say if they were complete or stripped. If you want more than 5.3 those blocks can easily be bored to 5.7 and all the LS1 stuff will fit. I just bought a 4.8 complete with harness and 4L60E trans for 400 bucks. it was Hydro locked and I completely rebuilt it in my spare time and shopped Ebay etc for the parts I needed. The machine work was about 1200 bucks but that was boring, decking, vatting, align honing the mains, installing the pistons on the rods and balancing the unit. I had the 862 heads opened up to 2.02 intake and the exhaust to 1.57 and did the porting my self. I did the bronze upgrade on the rockers with a Smith Brothers kit. It has a Howards ASA cam and LS7 lifters. LS six intake and a PSI harness. Got the computer re flashed at Texas Speed. Merges well in our 94 GMC SWB truck. My Grand son and I had a blast putting all this together over a year and a half time frame... Take your time! It doesn't hurt so bad if you stretch it out!!

Maybe its a North East Ohio thing but these motors are not that easy to find around here. I found a few but the miles are to high. I will continue the search!!! I will drive 250 miles for the right motor

For a price comp,,
Locally in Oregon,, guy does the 5.3's with modified harness and tune with a refresh (Gaskets, oil pump etc.. )
He gets around 3300 for a 5.3,,, quoted me 5500 for a 6.2 L92 with a 6L80E.. Thats 400+ Hp for < 6K.. still hurts to write the check... LOL

If it were me, grab a LS anything, even a 4.8, and swap everything over. I wouldn't worry too much about the upgrades. Just get it running and THEN worry about the upgrades later.

I wouldn't waste my time on an LS1 block for a performance build.

2.) If your planning to or end up needing to re-sleeve most companies will not work on the LS1 5.7 blocks.
3.) The most you can go without re-sleeve is 3.905 bore so not much to grow with.
If your just looking to build an LS1 with heads, cam, exhaust and maybe even a stroker kit to make say 450 then the LS1 can get it done.
Now you could certainly get it sleeved for max cubes, fill the water jackets with HardBlok and throw everything at until it finally gives out but now we're talking racing applications and lots of $$.

I feel your pain, I bought the used motor/trans from a wrecked TA for $3000 and then had it rebuilt to a forged 347 for another $3500 and engine dyno tuned. It gets pricey fast.
I started on a 99 Camaro V6-V8 conversion project last year and I've been slowly gathering parts. The car came with an aftermarket hood and some halo lights which had never been installed for $1200 and below is a run down of the parts I've purchased so far.
LQ9 block: $500
Machine work to block: $300
823 cylinder heads: $500
Custom grind camshaft: $400 (But thinking I want to go bigger)
Lunati High RPM link bar lifters: $850
Wiseco pistons: $900
Callies rods: $700
Engine harness: $150.00
I'm over $5,000 in and don't even have a running engine yet.
What I got, what I want, and what I need:
T56 with fresh Centerforce clutch and flywheel (got it but really want to do a powerglide or th400 so cha-ching
K-member from 01 Camaro (got it)
10 bolt from 01 Camaro (got it and may throw a gear in it and run it until it grenades but really want a MWC fab9 so cha-ching
Needs:
Intake manifold and fuel rails (Decisions) cha-ching
Fuel injectors (1000cc's from FIC) cha-ching
Throttle body (NW 102) cha-ching
Exhaust manifolds (1-7/8 stainless) cha-ching
Rocker arms (Harland Sharp adjustable 1.8 ratio) cha-ching
.660 lift spring kit (TSP or BTR) cha-ching
We're not even close to being done spending money as there still the fuel system, suspension, fab work, paint and body, etc.. and the sad part about all of this is you'll never get back what you put into it if you go try and sell it.

If you heart is set on a 6.0, look for a Express 2500 Van or a 2WD 2500 Silverado and get the engine and trans from it as well as the ECM and anything else that you need from it. Those vans are usually 2WD. I don't think I've ever seen at 4WD Van although they probably do exist.
When you're done, take it to the scrap yeard and recoop some of your money back. It won't be much but you won't have the parts van at your place.
