New Chick; Transmission Mechanic in Training
Hi. My name is Nicole. Hope I am taking the right steps here. I'm new to this forum thing, as this is the first one I came across that has consistently had up-to-date info. I'm an ol' Lady new to the business. Been turning wrenches since I could hold em'. I have a degree in Geochemistry, which is a long, lame story. I had my 2000 S10 tranny go out in 2019. We had a guy come and pull it so we could take it in for bench rebuild. I became more fascinated with transmissions than any other part of the automobile. I took a chance and went back to Community college to take some auto courses in transmissions. At this point, I knew what I wanted to be when I grow up. My automatic transmission professor insisted that I was to do my time as a pee-on tech by starting in a tire shop and working my way into the business. He told me what I wanted to do was not possible. Well here I am, have my own business I run out of my one car garage, and I have had nothing but success with my transmission bench rebuild business. Blah, blah. Long story short, this is a tough area to learn on my own. At times I was so frustrated and confused I could have smacked a baby. I came across this forum numerous times and found information I was specifically looking for. I decided to join and take a shot at this forum thing. Thank you for your help thus far, it has had a tremendous impact in my self-learning curve. After being here for a month or so, I decided to take it more seriously. My forte is the 4L60E. There is a HUGE market for it where I currently reside. But I also learned the hard way that this is not cut and dry. It would be awesome if I could find a "mentor" as my professor does not like that I have succeeded on my own, without having to do what these poor kids are required to endure in this industry. I'm nearly 40 and too old for that s**t. I'm looking to learn as much as I can, as fast as I can. Ultimately, I'd love to work with the racing community.
There is my intro.
I also have experience rebuilding Fords 4R70W and 4R100. I own a 98 T100, with A340E transmission, I know I'll be rebuilding it as well. I specialize in valve body shift kit installation and up to date modifications in my rebuilds. If I had a tattoo, it would be of a planetary gearset. I love this work.
Thanks everyone,
Nicole

Welcome. Almost all Autos are the same as far as how they work. Except some ford focus one of our techs (GM Dealership) had to do. It's an auto with a dual mass clutch.
but some schooling and starting at dealership is always a good idea. A dealership will send you to classes, at least I know Ford and GM do. But it limits you to only one Brand.
But the easy part is the trans. The hard part is getting them in and out. Transaxles suck and are heavy as hell. 8 & 10 speeds are getting ridiculously heavy and an Allison is stupid heavy.
But I'm sure you'll do great if you pursue it.
BTW, check out Performabuilts vids on youtube. Ryan does amazing work. They are long but indepth. I also like watching youtube channel Precision transmission. that old man makes it look easy too.
