Smile We have a ping..

Hey people!

Just joined this site last night... I picked up an 01 Trans Am a few weeks ago (she's a hottie).
Don't know much about LS1's quite yet but I'm picking it up...
Anyway - the thing is, I've only got 1000 miles to check it out and I'm hearing a little ping everytime I shift... (It's an automatic...don't talk crap).

I talked to some people...one said calipers...another said "It's nothing."

I'm sure "ping" is the technical term...and all kindsa specific, but maybe someone can help me out?

Thanks!

Welcome! Can you describe the "ping" in greater detail?

LOL - not really.

Sounds like metal shaking...like somethings loose. Any time I shift to reverse or drive...sometimes just on braking or letting off the brakes.

that almost sounds like a u-joint, but u-joints usually make more of a "clunk" than a ping.

Sounds like maybe the cross member is loose? Id just jack the car up, get under there, and shake a few things and see whats loose as thats what your problem sounds like.

i think he is hearing the imfamous Alum drive shaft "PING" look under the car and see if the drive shaft is aluminum. If it is the "PING' you hear is normal. The rear calipers could be making a little noise too, easy to fix with a little high temp silicone but its nothing to be concerned about.

Usually a U-joint will make a "clunk" type noise and also squeak when driving. Lay underneath and hit everything with a rubber mallet. Give more info on the "ping" noise. Front, rear, car cold, car warm....
