Merchant Marine is a branch of the military that hasnt been active since World War I and World War II. During the war Merchant Marines served on ships that carried all war supplies, troops and other wartime items that needed transportation. Since the Navy was to busy running warships overseas and coastwise alike, the Merchant Marines were created to take over as the main source of resource transportation. Nowadays, the Merchant Marine is no longer needed but still continues to operate ships throughout the world to operate containerships, cargo ships, tankers etc. Any ship that you see is operated by Merchant Marine officers and unlicensed crew. I am a 3rd Assistant Engineer(Officer). I'm working on board a coastwise oil tanker in the Gulf of Mexico on a 3 month on 3 month off rotation. I stand 2 four hour watches and do maintenance throughout the ship. Hope that helps out a little bit.
