Hey
I have a mostly stock 1994 Z28 with about 110K miles on the clock. It has all of the stuff in my sig. I am a senior in high school and I had a rough end to my junior year (girlfriend=long story). So my dad knew that I had always wanted a LT1 Z28, but I did not have near enough money to afford one at the time because I had another car and I had just got it paid off.
One day, I was looking through one of our local newspapers and I saw a 1994 Camaro Z28 listed for $1100. It said the car had hit a deer and was drive-able. I immediately called the guy and asked him about when I could look at it and we agreed on that night. I got to his house and the car was pulled in and I thought it looked really clean.
The closer i got, the more I realized why the car was only $1100 bucks. The doors were split. The driver's seat was destroyed. The carpet was ripped in a trail where you would get in. The Driver's side rocker and door were destroyed from running off a driveway. The whole front end needed replaced because the deer broke everything in some way. The car only had 103K miles and I thought that was really not that high for a '94. I saw a lot of potential in it so we decided to buy it.
First off, the tires were down to the metal chords so I knew I needed tires. I found an add in the local paper the next day for a set of wheels and brand new tires off a '93 Z for 300 bucks. I went to the kids house and he also had a bunch of other stuff laying around off his car. He sold me all of the seats out of his car (he had Corbeau seats), all the exterior lights (sidemarkers, yellow fronts, taillights, and everything else he had for an extra $300.
Then, i noticed that when I would hit 4,000 or so RPM, the tranny acted like it disengaged so I had to get a new tranny for it. I bought one off of a local rebuilder that was hopped up a bit for 1200 bucks and had it installed for 200 bucks. All in all, it cost about 1400 bucks for everything and I love it.
Then I needed new doors because the ones on it were cracked, split and destroyed. I found some in a local junkyard for 175 bucks for the pair. They were white and in great shape. I told the guy I needed nothing inside of them because I was going to switch all of my stuff over. Well, i got a free driver's window and a whole bunch of other goodies.
In all of our local yards, the cars had all been hit in the front so I had to order all of the front end pieces (fenders, bumper, and header panel) from the body shop. Those were not cheap at 400 bucks for it all but I didn't care because I needed them. The body guy also told me about a hood for sale about 10 miles away because they had just put an SS hood on his car and he wouldn't have a use for it so I rushed over and bought it for 50 bucks.
I put all of the parts on the car in the order I got them. Then, it was time to look for a paint job. I went around to several shops and got quotes from 1800 all the way to 3400 bucks for a paint job! I figured on just driving it in its multi color job for a while but then my cousin told me about one of his friends who used to work at a body shop and had a booth at his house. I talked to him the nest day and he was willing to do it for 1250 bucks if I helped him with some of the stuff. This included ALL of the body work (install new driver's side rocker, fix one spot on the driver's door, and fix a chip in the hatch).
I took it over and got it painted but the local NAPA store screwed up my paint code and gave us Torch Red instead of Bright Red like I wanted so now I have a unique Z28. I also chose to do Gloss Black headlight coves and stay red with the area around the Fog Lights. I think it was well worth the time and the money ($6200). I might be in it a bit steep, but when you want something, you'll do anything to get it.
