Default Looking into a LS1 Conversion for my Chevy II

Hey there, I am new to the forum and have just lately been introduced to the LS series blocks. My friend has a camaro and I love the way they sound, the amount of power it has and the fact that it gets awesome gas mileage.........remember my car has a carb so it likes to suck some fuel. Anyways I am looking for another chevy nova to put a full frame in. With all this extra strength it would only seem right to have a good source of power. I am looking for an inexpensive, lower mileage LS1 and 6 Spd Combo. I would like to spend less then 3 or 4 thousand so that I have money left to build the motor and the transmission. My goal is to get at least 600 Horsepower to the rear wheels. If anyone has been through the instalation portion or the basics of building up a mean LS1 then please let me know! Thanks!

James

Be ready to spend buccoo $$$$'s breaaking sh**. Been down that road and will go back down it again, but, not until I have $25-30K saved up just to get started. 600 RWHP is asking a LOT of an LS1/LS6 or any LSX based motor. FI is your friend to get that kind of power and you're gonna' break **** no matter how 'bullet-proof' you make it.

600 rwhp is going to cost more than you think with any motor but it is achievable with an LS1 with FI or nitrous

Well thats not exactly the answer I was looking for. I am not looking for a drag car so I definately dont want nitrous and I am trying to stay away from FI. Any suggestions on a kit for the motor from say trick flow that would give me a good bang for my buck....even if it isnt near my 600 rwhp? Thanks

600 rwhp on motor takes WAY more than $3-4k man. I hate to burst your bubble but you are going to have to get more cubes, stroker motor, a fuel injection system to support it, and a drivetrain to support that. If you dont want a drag car but just want to have a little fun and want something just nasty sounding you can get around 450 rwhp or a little more with a heads/big cam package from one of the sponsers on the right such as texas speed. Call one of their techs up and talk to them, tell them what you want and they can help you get there. 450 rwhp is quite a bit on the street if you have never driven one.

Oh I realize that the cost will be way more then three or four thousand so I am not sure where you got that number from. I putting a art morrison max g chassis underneath this car so I want something thats extremely powerful for hard cornering and autocross. As light as this car is though I am sure that 450 will be enough for now.

Thanks

I misread your post, you wanted to spend 3-4k on a combo to start with. I thought you didnt want to spend more than that total on the combo...my mistake. If its going to be mostly tube chassis on a Chevy II then 450 rwhp is going to push around the track pretty effectively! Good luck with the build!

Nice project...450rwhp is not hard with these motors. Trick flow or AFR heads with a mid 230s cam and a FAST intake with a good flowing exhaust and you are there as long as you have a good tuner. However 600 rwhp is a bigger step, you could do the same as above, only put as forged bottom end in the motor and run a 200hp shot of nitrous and you will be past your 600rwhp mark and the car will still be nice to drive around town and cruises.

To be quite honest,

If you're looking for 600+hp and pretty reliable.....I would suggest a ZZ572.

You can get it in 620hp (pump gas) and 720hp (sorry, race gas only) flavors right out of the crate from GM.

The 720hp version should net you just over 600hp at the wheels.

Expect to spend some green though, but that is with any mill. Fast / Cheap / Reliable, pick any 2.

why are you opposed to FI? a forged motor can handle it very well and put you past your 600 mark with a good setup, and be fun as hell to drive.
