Default Oil Performance

I just purchased my 05 GXP and it was run on regular oil. (5w-30) I want to switch to full synthetic, and have mixed reviews on Mobil 1 and Royal Purple. Does anyone have an idea of which is better for the motor?

of those two, I would choose Mobile 1.

However, if your open to all brands, no doubt - AMSoil!

www.amsoil.com

I've ONLY run AMSoil since 2004. My cars are now 9 years old both, and have over 210,000 miles total. I also run their filters, or WIX if they don't make one (such as my Oldsmobile oil filter)

They all work pretty much the same...

Mobil 1 is a good oil, Penzoil Platinum, Royal Purple....as long as it is synthetic.

You can use a heavier weight oil to try and stop lifter chatter as well...

I have used both Mobile 1 and Royal Purple and of the 2, RP is better. It keeps it's viscosity longer than Mobile 1. The new oil change feel (smoother running engine) with RP lasts for close to 3000 miles and with Mobile 1 I'd be lucky to get 1000 miles. Not sure if you know what I mean or not? Between the 2 I'd go RP. On a scortch test there was hardly a mark with the RP, with the Mobile 1 there was a much larger mark. Either one is fine though.

Amsoil FTW!

You can't beat changing your oil once a year.

RP is the superior oil between the two you mention, but the thing is, I can get a 5 qt bottle of Mobile 1 for $22 at Wal-Mart. 5 quarts of RP (when I can find it) is over $40. While RP is better, I don't think it's twice as good as M1, so I won't pay double for it.

I know, but everything is cheaper at Chi-Mart. lol... I change my oil at about 5000 miles so I don't mind paying a little more for it, especially since it protects much better.

I guess it depends on how you define "a little more." Nearly double the price is a lot more to me, and while I've seen data on RP providing more protection than many other brands, it's additional protection can be measured in tenths-of-a-percent. To me, it's hardly worth the price premium.

And for the record, we've had my Grand National since it was new and have run Mobil 1 exclusively since the first oil change back in June of 1987. The car now has over 170,000 hard miles on it (many of them 1/4 mile at a time ) and it's never had any issues, still has good oil pressure, and doesn't make any noise.

I know Mobil has changed it's formula over the years, and it may not be the best oil out there, but it's the best for the money.

I've always ran Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W-30 in my old monte, and now..Switch every 3300 or so miles....

Royal Purple is good stuff, but not really needed IMO..Costs twice as much..We used to run it in our open wheel modified..

FWIW I used Pennzoil Platinum on our last O&Fs.

If you go 6000 miles between changes that makes $3.00 per thousand miles.

The above post indicates you're better off using Mobil's semi-syn rather than full syn. A win-win, better oil less money.

No one's trying show anybody up. The guy asked for opinions, and we're presenting and debating them. You provided a couple of interesting links to support your position, I provided some personal experience to support mine.

In the end, mainmost gets the benefit of all of it to make up his mind!

For the record, I value your contribution on this site and respect your opinions, as you've got a lot of experience with these cars. I would never try to show you up. We just look at the oil issue differently!

I did find the article interesting, and it really drew my interest to the Valvoline Synthetic. We were a Valvoline family until Mobil 1 became widely available in the mid-80's. I might be willing to give their synthetic a try on the next oil change.

Get a catch can with sythetic. My intake is soaked in oil. I go through a 1qt every 3000k and change my oil at 6k. Back to your question though. Run what ever you want. Ames oil to me is the best but I run mobile 1. I've tried RP and I haven't noticed a diff. So, who knows. LS motors have a real shitty PCV system.

I've ran both,as of right now I had got a great deal on RP and K&N oil filters. So I decided to give it a try,it feels like it holds up it viscosity a lot better then Mobil 1 who knows I'm always high as a kit.But overall Mobile 1 is the better deal with the same results.I'll go back to Mobile 1 FTW

Here is the thing... If cost is an issue go with Mobile 1, if cost is not an issue then go with RP. I know no one is trying to show anybody up. We just have a difference of opinion.

This is slightly off-topic, but still relevant: How important is it to "prime" a new oil filter by pouring in some of the new oil before installation? How much difference does it make?
