To TEST your front wheel bearings, lift the front of car so the tires are off the ground. Get a 4x4x1' or like peice of wood lower the car enough to load one tire on it leaving the other free. Carefully get in and start your car, turn off the traction control and stability control. Now carfully put it in gear (D) and let the free wheel rotate on it`s own. Go to the free spinning wheel and reach in and lay you hand on the coil spring. IT SHOULD BE VERY SMOOTH, no vibration at all. If there is a vibration you can usually tell how many rollers are damaged by the pulse just count them not that it matters, because the bearing is still in trouble if you only count one.
Now apply the brake and park then repeat everything for the opposite side.
I do this everytime I get an oil change. The guys are pretty good and it does not take any time at all when it is on the hoist. I explained it to them and they are good with it and the 10 bucks I hand him when done.
You can also tell while driving, turn everything off and going straight and smooth , listen closely. then with a very little effort on the wheel first left , just a little and gentle the noise will go quiet and the same when done to the right. This is not as accurate but does tell you if you should be checking more closely.

Popping that damn axle out of the hub was a real PITA! In fact, I decided to just replace the bad one even though I had purchased two as I planned to replace them both. Now that I don't have the car anymore, I have a brand new hub bearing sitting in a box in my garage if anyone is interested in saving a little dough.
how would you test the rears?
