Default Back to the Track!

Well, made my first trip up to Richmond Dragway tonight...haven't been to a track since July '08. Weird night but had fun nonetheless.

It was about 80*F, humidity wasn't too bad though I can't give you a number. Car was hot the whole time--1hr drive up from Newport News and jumped right in the staging lane. Didn't have a whole lot of time since I got there around 8pm and they close the lanes at 9:30 so I basically just hot-lapped it all night. Only got in 5 runs.

Best run was 14.20 @ 97.4
2.07 60'

Compare that to my overall best time back in San Antonio:
13.89 @ 99.9
2.08 60' <--

I ran the 13.89 before I got the cat-back and only had intake + downpipe. How is it that I can run a better 60' tonight with the cat-back but lose .3 sec and 2.5 mph? I always thought the exhaust would hurt the 60' but give a better ET and trap speed...

I know there are many many variables in play here, and I'm definitely no expert. What do you guys think?

Well weather/ altitude could be hurting your top end power, and its not that much better of a 60 foot. If u went from a 2.08 to a 1.98 Thats a different story. Plus being hot kills these cars. My best runs have always been my second to last. i usually get like 3-4 runs then let the car cool. and run 2-3 more runs after that. once i let the beast cool it always runs way better. I have dropped from a 15.6XX when ariving at a T&T night down to a 15.15 after sun drops and car cools, This is at banidmere speedway... No my car isnt broke

What are you guys doing to get 60' times like that?

What tires are you running?

I've only made a couple of runs with mine but my 60' times were 2.2 - 2.4 but still got a 13.88 but she feels like there is so much more...

I'm not sure weather played much a part in it since in San Antonio it was 80-85*F on the night I ran the 13.89. I'm sure running hot isn't helping the top end...probably will have to go earlier and bring some ice to cool it down between runs. The intake cools down pretty quick on these cars but the throttle body takes a little longer--it was still hot when I was setting up to run each time.

Very good! I've had the itch for a while now and since moving here and having another kid in January it's just been a matter making time to head up to Richmond. I'm gonna try to head up there again probably early July...then it starts getting pretty hot so I'll not go again until September at least. With cooler temps I'm confident I can run at least a 13.8 again. *crosses fingers*

Practice, practice, practice. These cars are very hard to launch just right and the only advice I can give is to find that sweet spot where you can first ease into the throttle and stomp on it when the time is right. I brake torque it to about 2500rpm. Of course, grippy tires help a lot. The first time I ran the 13.89 I was running the stock Bridgestones w/about 15k miles on them. The tread hadn't quite worn off yet. Now I have Federal SS595 with less than 2k miles on them so they hook up pretty good. I actually ran a 1.99 60' once with an ET of 13.91 @ 99.53 FWIW.

Just for comparison sake, there was a Charger R/T there last night that was running 14.5-14.6 all night. Didn't talk to the guy to see if it was modded or not. Looked like he was launching ok; looked like he knew what he was doing at least. Also was a newer model Mustang GT running pretty much identical numbers as me--14.2s and the like. Seemed like a lot of cars running slower than I think they should have been running...

Humidity hurts your HP levels too. Can u post the track, date, and if you have a run at the top or bottom of an hour . post the numbers for that. We can get a DA for your run.

I've got those on the 2001 Firebird. 275/35/18 all around. They stick pretty good. Will probably go with the Nexen N3000s next time on the GXP

Different days/tracks - don't look too much into it.

For instance, I ran 14.2 @ 98 with an intake earlier this year.

Got a catback, downpipe, and a tune, and ran 14.3 @ 98 my last time out. Humidity was up and was about 40 degrees warmer - around 95 degrees. My goal was to match my old time, but with DR's I should be able to be well into the 13's with cooler temps.

I ran a 14.02 at 98 on nexon n3000's with a 1.98 60' last fall. went to the track last weekend with hoosier drs on the front and could not break 14.10 and my 60' times were 2.1x all night. Temp was in the upper 90's and very humid. combine temp humidity and the fact that the dr's were too short 245/35/18s screwed my times up all over the place.

Using the DA calculator at Dragtimes.com your 14.20 turns into a 13.91 @99.4X MPH----DA is 1760

Thants only 2 tenths behind your best run.
