What would cause noisy lifters when cold?
A friend called me up today and asked if I could swap out his lifters on an '06 Impala LS4. Since its a fairly new vehicle I don't see why it would have problems with the lifters unless there's an issue with the DOD(???). He said there is an audible tick(lifter???) that is only present when cold; it goes away after a few minutes of driving and is fine through the rest of the day.
If a lifter swap is necessary then what is invovled? I've done some H/C installs on friends LSX trucks/cars but never a DOD LS4. Any help is appreciated!!!

I would bet, heavily, that what he call's 'lifter' tick is, in fact, the rockers clacking away until the oil gets 'round to the top of the valve train. Sounds normal to me. After that, in a distinct second place, blown out exhaust manifold gasket.

First the LS motors have priority oiling to the bottom end.
Second they are dirty beasts inside, The burnt varnish builds up a thin layer on everything internal, especially if your tail pipes are black inside due to incorrect fueling.
There is a DOD filter located underneath the oil pressure sensor, next to the TB neck, (P/N 12585328 ten bucks in Canada, probably two bucks for you guys south)
I use http://www.duralube.com/Galleries/Sm...-SellSheet.pdf put 1 in now and one every oil change. It works and I have used it for many, many years.
On their home page there is even a savings coupon now. Their upper cyl. lubricant works also.

Mine does it when it's really cold. I brought it to the dealer and they said it was normal. I had them put that on the WO incase I ever have a problem with the top end. Now, tomorrow I'm bringing it in as my tranny just caught a huge cold. Oh well.

Mine clacks for a second or so before the oil hits. The dealer said it was common. I didn't think it was until I saw this thread. This is LSx vehicle number 5 for me, and it's the first one to make startup noises.
