Default Water Pump - How hard to DIY?

Long story short, I think the water pump **** the bed yesterday at some point. Car went into limp mode (Code 1258 - Overheat condition) with a steady CEL (not flashing). Checked coolant level last night and there was very little remaining. Filled it this morning and I thing it all dumped out again...too hot to open radiator/waterpump fill area. Same level remains in overflow.

First off...will stop-leak stop this kind of leak? I'm not certain where it's coming from, and can see that the pump is a little wet in different areas. It's possible that it's a hose, too, but again...not sure.

If some stop-leak product isn't going to work, how hard is it to R&R the WP? Does the engine need to be hoisted up or dropped down? I could not possibly do that myself, nor can I afford a $1000 repair bill.

Surprisingly, the ACDelco replacement WP is only $120 from RockAuto, plus w/e gasket(s) I need (have no idea), and shipping...so likely $180 or so.

If it's the water pump weep-hole, then stop leak isn't going to work. Sucks, because you won't know until you get it apart. Hopefully, it won't be too much of a bitch.

Thanks guys. Did either of you need the "special tool" to get the belt off? IDK if I can find one anywhere locally, nor do I want to pay $80-100 for one.

EDIT: Also, since I will be dumping the coolant anyway, is it OK to at least try the stop leak stuff?

Lastly, which "stop leak" product would you recommend? The only one that comes to mind is Bar's.

Bar's Leak is the best. Actually there was a time when GM put those Bar's Leak pellets into their cars. I don't know if they still do that.

have you tried a compression test to isolate exactly; as you said you where curious as to where it was, and that it was in several spots from what you could see...?

You can prolly get a cheap coolant pressure tester from HarborFreight or somewhere, maybe AutoZone? That will show you where the leak is for sure.

And GM sure did use a leak preventer. It came in my STS with the N*.

I haven't done a pressure test, but how would that tell me where the leak is?

more than likely if it is the waterpump u can see it leak.. just run the car for about five mins.. and revv it up a little.. that happened to me a jiffy lube they put a injector cleaner that exits the system thru the exhaust so they revved it up.a few revvs and bamm the fluid started rushing out.. so yea.. just my lil story..

It will make the leak more visable, you will still have to visually look for it but since the system will be under pressure it will leak faster and more steady than just if it is static w/o pressure. This is common practice for us it's called a hydrostatic pressure test, hydro for short. If you can see it leaking but can't tell exactly where it's coming from they sell a dye that you can add to the system. The dye will react to ultraviolet light and be more visable when useing a black light. So that may be another option for you. Good luck.
