GM people say a lot of things.
We were told the MP3 patch was Corvette-only (part number, etc.) The MP3 patch actually hard-coded the NAV unit. Yet we still kept our Pontiac logo on startup, fixed radio static (05s), and gained MP3 playback.
All the PAL does is interface with XM (plug and play).
Maybe you should be a guinea pig. If I had XM, I would have done it quite some time ago.

I added the factory XM to my vehicle (not a fun task) and purchased the PAL (version 2.x). Works great!

Personally, I'd get the PAL.
You can install it straight to the NAV unit. It should then create soft XM keys for you. I'd personally mount it behind the radio.
From there, you'd have three source options: PAL, Direct, and Aux.
