NEW GXP RECALL!!!! Caught fire!
On topic... I have been in the automovite/industrial (now) quality, strictly warranty business for quite some time. I've luckily never had to deal with a full on recall myself but I have been close a few times.
It really sucks to hear about your situation. Your car should be put back to exactly how it was before the fire. And you certainly shouldn't have had to hire an attourney to ensure you're treated correct and fair. while you have them, might as well have them call GM to dispute your case and hopefully get his services covered as well. A lot of times they will pay the petty claims like yours to just keep the media out and you're still cheap. Typically, you wouldn't have any issues having all that work done. The manufacturer has to honor a recall claim, even after the warranty has run out... basically, it's a free lifetime warranty on that part.
As for the reason you're in your situation (if you are still i'm not sure) is that in the first few days of a recall (immediately before, and immediately after issued) is total chaos. There are a lot of unanswered questions and new issues that come up. So you kind of got caught in the... what do i do with this...
I'm not saying it's correct and justifying, every company I've been with (Ford and Current) would just pay the entire claim, putting your car back to normal no questions asked.
Sorry for the length, it's just a topic i know a lot about.
As well, I JUST got an 08 GP GXP, do i need to take it in and have the recall done (Live in Indy)
But that should by no means ever be covered under warranty...
All parts go back to the manufacturer. I know when I dealt with ford, I returned many parts back to Ford and denied warranty because it was OBVIOUS that part had been modified.
