Transmission Temps
#21
I've always been told the hotter the trans gets the less the fluid is able to lubricate and lack of lubrication leads to most issues. Either way I went on the safe side and put one on my GXP. Anyone out there with a cooler have their trans go?

Imperial Maxi-Cool XL. The part # is 243012. Basically, I took the car to my buddy's trans shop and told him to slap the biggest cooler on it that he could find. This is what I came home with:
It rated for a 30,000 GVWR, too!
I don't have a trans temp gauge on mine, but I went with the finned aluminum pan by ZZP. Plus it has a drain plug.
According to Intense Racing though, coolers don't seem to help these transmissions from breaking. They stated that hard parts are what breaks in these. But, I do figure every little bit helps.
You can read more what they said here (scroll down about half-way):

Interesting, however, I gotta think that less heat in a tranny is a good thing and certainly can't be bad.

I have 2 of those exact same ones. They are actually made by Hayden. I even think it say's it on the top of them. They are a good cooler. They are lined in series and NOT hooked up to the radiator. I still ran at 221* on the way home tonight. Gee, do you think my T.C is bad? I am so sick of this hot BS in the trans. Thank god I have a new one coming soon.

So, I drove home back to LA from Phoenix today. I ran the westbound Chiriaco grade on I10 at about 80 MPH. Outside temperature arranged from 84-90 degrees. Highest trans temp I saw was 176 degrees.
Needless t oday, I think I have cooling on the tranny now, and would recommend this particular cooler to anyone wanting a little extra peace-of-mind.

Ancient *** post that got bumped, but I figured I'd chime in. I run TEP Max Cooler kits on both my LS4s. No idea what the ISS runs, but the GXP has never gone over 175 driving it hard. It could get up to 220 before on just an easy highway cruise.
I highly recommend that kit, and a cooler is essential to any LS4...stock or modded.
